SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT
Charles Law states that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its absolute (Kelvin) temperature, assuming all other factors such as pressure remain constant. VT or V = kT, where k is a constant

Rewriting equation 2, we have: V/T = constant Charles' Law is also commonly written as: V1/T1= V2/T2 where V1and T1are the original values of the gas, while V2and T2represent its final values.

ENGAGE

A balloon with diameter 23 inches was put into a freezer for an hour.

The balloon was taken out and the diameter decreased to 12 inches. The balloon become smaller.

After an hour put at warmer air, the balloon diameter increased to 18 inches. The balloon gets bigger again.

Why this thing happened? 5/27/12

EMPOWER
The water is heated by using bunsen burner and the temperature is taken by using temperature sensor. When the piston of the heat engine/gas law apparatus rise 1milimeter, button is press to record the temperature.

CHARLES' LAW EXPERIMENT

balloon

test tube

beaker water

temperature & pressure sensor hot plate

OBSERVATION
After one hour and 30 minutes, the water become hot and the balloon was expand. The balloon expand because the air inside the test tube is increasing in volume and moved into the balloon.

RESULTS

Temperature increasing with time

Pressure keep constant

GRAPHS
A graph of x against is plotted. A linear graph is obtained. When extrapolated, length x = 0 occurs when gas temperature, = -273 C

When the Celsius scale is replaced with the Kelvin scale, a linear graph that goes through origin is obtained.

DISCUSSIONS
What is the relationship between the volume of a gas and the temperature of the gas? What is the trend that show by the graph plotted? What is the manipulated variable? Does this experiment support the Charles' law? Explain the phenomenon that involve both temperature and volume.

ENHANCE
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico is the largest hot air balloon festival in the entire world! Held each October, the event spans nine days and features over 750 incredible balloons. Explain how hot air balloon can fly into the sky?

5/27/12

ANSWER
Hot air balloon have three important compartments which are basket, burners and envelope.

envelope

burner

basket

To make it fly, the person that sit in the basket will open up the burner to start the fire. Heat produce by the burner will heat up the air inside the envelope. The heat will cause the air inside the envelope to increase in volume. As the volume of the air increasing, the hot air balloon will move into the sky.

UNIQUE FEATURE OF THIS ACTIVITY

Two data: pressure and temperature can be taken at the same time

Parallax error can be prevented

Plotting graphs of temprature and pressure become easier

Slight changes of temperature (0.01 degree) can be detected
