CJFMW SHIP: Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles in Diverse, Rural Communities!

Goals
1. To support, promote, implement, and evaluate health interventions that lead to sustainable improvements in health by creating changes in policies, systems, and environments where individuals live, work, play, and seek health care services. 2. To reduce the overall cost of health care in Minnesota. CJFMW SHIP: Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles in Diverse, Rural Communities!

What are policy, systems and environmental changes?

Policy interventions may be a law, ordinance, resolution, mandate, regulation, or rule (both formal and informal). Systems interventions are changes that impact all elements of an organization, institution, or system. Environmental interventions involve physical or material changes to the economic, social, or physical environment.

CJFMW SHIP: Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles in Diverse, Rural Communities!

Why focus on policy, systems and environmental change?

Sustainability of change Broad Reach: Major health problems will not be solved solely by individual health promotion programs. Health problems are influenced by societal policies and environments that in some way either sustain behaviors or fail to foster healthier choices Where you live affects how you live By addressing the causes of poor health and improving our environments, we can prevent many people from becoming chronically ill

Combating Obesity
American society has become 'obesogenic,' characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, non-healthful foods, and physical inactivity. Policy and environmental change initiatives that make healthy choices in nutrition and physical activity available, affordable, and easy will likely prove most effective in combating obesity.
