Learners are motivated to work on a task to the extent that they (a) Expect to succeed on the task and (b) Value achievement or other potential outcomes. If both are present, learners may develop a sense of self-efficacy. (Atkinson, 1964; Feather, 1982)
Self-efficacy is learners belief about their capability of succeeding on specific tasks. (Schunk, 1994)

Which factors are working here? How would you have responded?
Alia is a low achiever in Mehmoodas class VII mathematics class. As Mehmooda monitored the students during seatwork, she saw that Alia had made little progress on the word problems. Come on, Alia. I know you can do this work, Mehmooda whispered. Read the problem carefully a few times. Then break the problem into parts and try drawing a picture of each part. Im going to come back here in a few minutes to see how youre doing.
22nd, 29th and 31st May 2012 Educational Research Institute 21

In a few minutes, Mehmooda returned, leaned over Alia, and said, What do we have? Alia was still somewhat uncertain, but she obviously had gone over the problem and tried to get started. She pointed to the problem and said, They want to know the overall percentage decrease in the cost. Good, Mehmooda smiled. Now, what else do you know? As Alia began explaining his understanding of the problem, Mehmooda asked only as many questions as necessary to keep her on the right track. Finally, as she arrived at a solution, she said, Thats excellent thinking, Alia Now? Look at the problem again to see whether it all makes sense. Ill be back in a minute to see your final solution. Be ready to explain exactly how you did it. Okay? She smiled and moved on to another student.

The Link System

Visualize yourself holding a smooth warm egg in the morning. As you feel the smoothness, you make a hole in the shell. Out pops a cows (beef) head with one horn in the shape of a beautiful silver spoon and the other is shaped like a shiny golden fork. The cow winks at you through her modern spectacles. You can feel the fragrance of the French perfume that the cow had applied. You leave the egg and hurriedly start eating a banana. In a delicate glass you pour orange juice. When you were about to drink, sss it suddenly fell on the ground. You are scolded badly by your mother and asked to clean the floor with soap and toothbrush. In the process you scrape the paint off and then cover it up with nail polish.
