Unit 5

1.What types of climates are there?

World climates The earth is divided into five main climates zones: one hot zone, two temperate zones and two cold zones. However there are different typesof climates within these zones. Climate effects flora and fauna and people live.

1.What types of climates are there?

Hot climates The hot zone is between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn. Temperature are generally high because sunlight reaches the earth at a perpendicular angle all year round. There is little differences in temperatures in the differents seasons. There are three main climates in the hot zone: equatorial, tropical and desert

1.What types of climates are there?

temperate climates The two temperate zones are between the tropics and the polar circles. Temperatures changes because sunlight reaches the Earth at different angles throughout the year. There are four main climates in the temperates zones: Mediterranean, oceanic, continental and chinese.

1.What types of climates are there?

Cold climates The cold climates zones are between the polar circles and the poles. Sunlight strikes the earth at an oblique angle and therefore covers a wider space. Consecuently, temperatures always very cold. The polar climate is characteristic of the polar regions.Mountains also have a cold climate.

2.-What are rainforests like?

Tropical rainforest climate is a type of tropical climate in which there is no dry season all months have meanprecipitation values of at least 60 mm (2.36 inches). Tropical rainforest climates have no pronounced summer or winter; it is typically hot and wet throughout the year and rainfall is both heavy and frequent. One day in an equatorial climate can be very similar to the next, while the change in temperature between day and night may be larger than the average change in temperature between "summer" and "winter".

3.What is the savannah like?

A tropical climate is a climate of the tropics. In the Kppen climate classification it is a nonarid climate in which all twelve months have mean temperatures above 18 C (64 F). Unlike the extra-tropics, where there are strong variations in day length and temperature, with season, tropical temperature remains relatively constant throughout the year and seasonal variations are dominated by precipitation.

4.What are desert landscapes like?

A desert climate (in the Kppen climate classification BWh, BWkl, BWn), also known as an arid climate, is a climate that does not meet the criteria to be classified as a polar climate, and in which precipitation is too low to sustain any vegetation at all, or at most a very scanty scrub.

5.What are mediterranean landscapes like?

A Mediterranean climate is the climate typical of most of the lands in the Mediterranean Basin, and is a particular variety of subtropical climate. The lands around the Mediterranean Sea form the largest area where this climate type is found, but it also prevails in much of California, in parts of Western and South Australia, in southwestern South Africa, sections of Central Asia, and in parts of central coastal Chile.

6.What are continental landscapes like?

Continental climate is a climate characterized by important annual variation in temperature due to the lack of significant bodies of water nearby. Often winter temperature is cold enough to support a fixed period of snow each year, and relatively moderate precipitation occurring mostly in summer, although there are exceptions such as the east coast areas of North America which show an even distribution of precipitation: this pattern is called Humid continental climate, but dry continental climates also exist. Regions with a continental climate exist in portions of the Northern Hemisphere continents (especially North America[1] and Asia), and also at higher elevations in other parts of the world.

7.What are oceanic landscapes like?

An oceanic climate, also called marine west coast climate, European climate, maritime climate and Cascadian climate for Kppen climate classification Cfb and subtropical highland for Kppen Cfb or Cwb, is a type of climate typically found along the west coasts at the middle latitudes of some of the world's continents. This climate generally features warm, but not hot summers and cool, but not cold winters, with a narrow annual temperature range. It typically lacks a dry season, as precipitation is more evenly dispersed through the year. It is the predominant climate type across much of Europe, coastal northwestern North America, portions of southern South America and small areas of Africa, southeast Australia, New Zealand, as well as isolated locations elsewhere.

8.What are polar landscapes like?

Regions with a polar climate are characterized by a lack of warm summers (specifically, no month having an average temperature of 10 C(50 F) or higher). Regions with polar climate cover over 20% of the Earth. The sun shines 24 hours in the summer, and barely ever shines at all in the winter (see midnight sun and polar night). Polar climate results in treeless tundra, glaciers, or a permanent or semi-permanent layer ofice.

9.What are alpine landscapes like?

Alpine climate is the average weather (climate) for a region above the tree line. This climate is also referred to as mountain climate or highland climate. In the Kppen climate classification the alpine climate is part of "Group E," along with the polar climate, where no month has a mean temperature higher than10 C (50 F).[1] Certain highland climates can also fit under hemiboreal climate or Semi-arid climate groups of climate classification.
