INTRODUCTION

The potential of information technology (IT) can be used broadly under two heads as a tool for direct contribution to agricultural productivity as an indirect tool for empowering farmers to take informed and quality decisions which will have positive impact on the way agriculture and allied activities are conducted.

SEEDS DEVELOPMENT

Remote management of grain storage facility for high quality of agricultural products Remote environmental monitoring system via the Internet Real-time monitoring and analysis of temperature variation in the storage facility Collection and distribution of crop growth stage information and pest information using GPS (Global Positioning System)

SOIL DEVELOPMENT

Technology is dramatically increasing the amount of land each farmer can work effectively. Using the GPS vocational device and sensors in the field, farmers can harvest, along with their crops, detailed digital maps of their fields. Precise application reduces waste and improves yield

USE OF IT IN POST HARVEST TECHNOLOGY

Use of e-nose and colour sorter The post harvest losses can be reduced by proper sorting and grading of the food products The value of product can be increased. Proper sorting and grading reduces processing time and increases efficiency of the machine

E-NOSE

An e-nose is an instrument which comprises an array of electronic chemical sensors with partial specificity or broad band chemical selectivity's and an appropriate pattern recognition system capable of recognizing simple of complex odours. This feature is the key property on which e-noses found their working principle. Their main application lies in sorting food products on the basis of their odour.

E-NOSE

COLOUR SORTER
It is used to separate on the basis of colours Electronic colour sorter separates food products on the basis of differences in colour. Each kernel is viewed and electronically compared with the preselected colour background and accepted or rejected. It can also separate mud balls and other foreign materials whose colour does not match with the pre- determined colour. http://www.satake.com.au/colour_sorting/animation. htm

IT FOR AGRICULTURE PRODUCTION AND MARKETING

IT is playing an important and vital role in agricultural production and marketing. In order to take the real status of agricultural production and marketing, there is an urgent need to develop the following items: Farmers crop database should be managed. The database includes the kinds of crops, the size of cultivated area, time of harvest and yield. Crops information service should be created. Production techniques and information inquiry system should be created.

REMOTE SENSING

A means_get_ reliable information_object without_physical contact with the object. It uses various platform which has utility in agricultural survey. Remotely sensed images_use_identify nutrient deficiencies, diseases, water deficiency or surplus, weed infestations, insect damage, hail damage, wind damage, herbicide damage, and plant populations.

can be used as base maps in variable rate applications of fertilizers and pesticides images allows farmers to treat only affected areas of a field. Ranchers use remote sensing to identify prime grazing areas, overgrazed areas or areas of weed infestations. Landing institutions use data to evaluate the relative values of land by comparing archived images with those of surrounding fields.

ROLE OF IT IN R&D
Enhancement of information dissemination and knowledge Exchange of information with farmers Establishment of NAIS will serve the purpose of central data base.

IT VISION 2020

Department of Agriculture & corporation (DAC) has formulated IT vision 2020.

Information relating to agriculture sector would be available to the ultimate users the farmers - for optimizing their productivity and income

Extension and advisory services making use of information technology would be available to the farmers on round the clock basis

The tools for information technology will provide networking of agriculture sector not only in the country but also globally

CONCLUSION
We believe that, particularly in the case of agriculture, there is a great potential to benefit from IT the framework for an IT-based agricultural information dissemination system is proposed. By exploiting progress in IT It can be rightly stated that though Information Technology in the agriculture is in growing stage in the Indian context IT will be one of the most important areas in the near future for agricultural development
