Facilities Going Green

At General Motors, we strive to make our facilities more environmentally-friendly from things like building design and maintenance of wildlife habitats on our property, to clean-up and redevelopment of Brownfield sites.

Leadership

in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED Certification) General Motors Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant in Michigan has a gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The building is the first automotive manufacturing plant in the world as well as the largest facility and the most complex manufacturing site to ever receive any level of LEED certification. LEED certification is the building industrys well-respected recognition of superior energy 6/25/12

GM's

Lansing Delta Township Assembly facility is where the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse are assembled. The facilitys environmental highlights include: The 1.5 million square foot roof is made of a special white polymer that reduces heat absorption, resulting in reduced energy and costs to cool the building. More than 25 percent of the construction materials used to build the plant were composed of recycled content. Eighty percent of the waste generated during construction, or 3,963 tons, was diverted from landfills.

Wildlife

Habitat Certification As a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council, we have designated more than 870 acres in North America as habitat enhancement and restoration projects to provide food, water and homes for wildlife.Currently, 14 of our facilities in the U. S. and Canada have achieved Wildlife Habitat Council certification. Brownfield Redevelopment When closing a facility or searching for a site for a new facility, environmental due diligence is always part of the process. When vacating a site, we work with the local government and community to ensure that 6/25/12

Materials & Recycling

GM, when we develop new vehicles, our designers and engineers work to find ways to improve the impact our products will have on the environment throughout their entire lifecycle. We look at everything from the materials that go into our vehicles and the manufacturing processes used to build them, to energy consumption on the road and the recyclability of our vehicles at the end of their useful life.

Vehicle

Design When designing new vehicles, we use recycled and bio-based materials from renewable resources whenever economically and technically possible. Engineers in our Design for the Environment group work with materials and components suppliers toidentify opportunities to continually increase the use of these materials. Recycled materials in our products come from a variety of origins from things like old pop bottles, blue jeans and nylon carpet, to used tires and recycled vehicle bumpers. In fact, were even beginning to explore some opportunities to use recycled waste products 6/25/12 from our own manufacturing facilities in

Finding

New Life for Old Vehicles When our vehicles reach the end of their useful life for their owners, we want to ensure that what happens to those vehicles is responsible for the environment. To help make this happens, we design our vehicles to be as recyclable and recoverable as is feasible, and we work to implement these designs on our vehicles around the world. We follow industry ISO standards on vehicle recycling and recoverability and we have developed internal global standards as well to gain common benefits across regions. Today, GM vehicles are at least 85 percent recyclable and 95 percent recoverable (by

Sustainable Manufacturing

Although

most people think of the vehicle when talking about automakers and the environment, at GM we know the sustainability of our manufacturing operations matters, too. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact during all stages of the product lifecycle. Ourenvironmental principlesform the foundation for our manufacturing practices and each of our facilities tracks and reports its annual performance on energy use, water use, greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Our commitment to improvement and the innovative practices weve employed have 6/25/12

Energy

GM is one of the leading users of renewable energy in the manufacturing sector. We use energy from solar, hydro and landfill gas resources. And around the globe we have reduced our overall energy usage globally by more than 40 percent between 2005 and 2009. The amount of energy weve saved from these reductions is enough to heat and power 1,300,000 homes. Emissions By saving energy and increasing the use of renewable energy sources, we have reduced CO2 emissions from our facilities by 39 percent from 2005 to 2009.
6/25/12

Water

Between 2005 and 2009, we reduced the amount of water used by our worldwide facilities by nearly 35 percent. Waste To reduce the waste coming out of our facilities, we focus first on decreasing the amount of waste that is generated by our manufacturing processes to begin with. Then, for waste that cannot be avoided, we work hard to find ways to recycle those materials for use in new products either in our vehicles or in other consumer products. We currently have 76 facilities around the world, which have earned a landfill-free certification. This means that these facilities send no waste to landfills it is either 6/25/12 recycled or used to create energy. We have

GM, were busy working on a variety of advanced propulsion technologies to improve the performance of our vehicles in terms of fuel efficiency, energy diversity and emissions. A number of these technologies are in our vehicles today, and more are yet to come. We know that our customers around the world have many varied needs and wants thats why were working on solutions that provide various benefits depending on where you live in the world and what your driving habits are. This includes advances to the traditional internal combustion engine,

Governmental

Cooperation GM is an active industry partner when it comes to dialogue about solutions to make our industry more sustainable. We recently worked with the Obama Administration and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers to reach a voluntary agreement for the industry that will coordinate federal fuel economy and emissions standards. This new agreement will help to benefit both consumers and automakers by helping get more clean and efficient vehicles on the road quickly and more affordably. In 2007, GM was also the first automaker to join the United States Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) to 6/25/12 support a partnership of industry and

Leader in Fuel Economy Throughout our vehicle brands we have 13 vehicle models that achieve at least a 30 mpg highway rating or higher for the 2010 model year. Weve made our vehicles more efficient through the use of a variety of technologies such as Active Fuel Management, six-speed transmissions, variable valve timing, and direct injection. We also offer five hybrid vehicles Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Yukon, GMC Sierra and Cadillac Escalade.

addition to fuel efficiency, were also looking at alternatives to gasoline to power our vehicles to help reduce our dependence on petroleum and provide our customers with choices that work for them. Right now in the U.S. we offer 17 vehicle models from all four of our brands that can run on E85 a fuel blend made of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. We also have created partnerships to advance the development of ethanol from a variety of materials such as agricultural and wood waste, and weve been working with others on a variety of initiatives around the country to help expand the availability of the fuel to 6/25/12

Project

Driveway Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles on the Road with Real Drivers In 2007, we launched a test program, Project Driveway, here in the U.S. with a fleet of Chevrolet Equinox vehicles that are powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology. Since then, these vehicles have been driven by a host of every day drivers on their typical commutes and daily driving routes to help us see how the technology performs and what people have to say about the vehicles. Since the start of the program, weve expanded it to parts of Europe and collectively the vehicles have logged over one million miles on the roadways. Weve made great progress with this technology and are encouraged by the 6/25/12
