Internet
Network consisting of a worldwide network of computer Uses the TCP/IP protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange. It is a link of computers that links many different types of system all over the world. Initially it was used only by the research organizations and universities to share and exchange information. But now used by everyone.

Basic services of internet


Electronic Mail (e-mail): Allows users to send a mail (message) to one another on the internet in any part of the world . File Transfer Protocol: Allows user to move a file from one computer to another on the internet. Telnet: Allows user to log into another computer somewhere on the internet i.e. remote login(team viewer). Usenet News: Allows group of users to exchange their views/ideas/information (Blogs/Forums).

Hypertext documents on Internet are known as web pages Web pages are created using HTML Hypertext : text + hyperlinks WWW uses client-server model and Internet Protocol called HTTP for interaction among computers on the Internet Web server and Web client

www browser is a special software loaded on the web client computer that normally provides navigation to the facilities to the user. Allows the user to visit the server computers website and to access the information stored on it by specifying URL address

Uses of Internet

Intranet Intra+ Net : an internal or private Internet used strictly within the confines of a company, university, or organization. "Inter" means "between or among," hence the difference between the Internet and an Intranet. Internet: Like Communication between various branches of an organization. The Internet is more of a marketing. The Intranet is your internal communications mechanism.

A technical definition of Intranets: An Intranet is a network based on the internet TCP/IP open standard. An intranet belongs to an organization, and is designed to be accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web site looks and act just like other Web sites, but has a firewall surrounding it to fend off unauthorized users.

What is an Extranet?

private network that uses Internet protocols and the public telecommunication system to securely share part of a business's information or operations with suppliers, partners, customers, or other businesses.

An extranet can be viewed as part of a company's Intranet that is extended to users outside the company.

Differences between Internet , Intranet and Extranet Internet, which is available for everyone to use. Intranets that used the same friendly Web interface but put up firewalls so that only employees could see the information on the site. Extranet finds itself somewhere in betweenthere's still a firewall, but you allow only selected outsiders, such as business partners and customers, inside.
