MEANING OF SOCIAL NETWORKING


Social networking is the practice of expanding the number of one's business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals. It is the act of interacting and networking with others in a social online environment via the use of a website.

Boyd and Ellison (2007) define social networking websites as: Web-based service that allows individuals to (1) construct a public or semipublic profile with in a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share connection, and (3) review and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The nature of these connections may vary from site to site.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

To know the usage rate of social networking websites To know the factors influencing the use of social networking websites To study the effectiveness of social networking websites as an activity platform

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Steinfield, C., Ellison, N., Lampe, C. (2008). found that throughout the data collection period users perception and users didnt change much even when platform had undergone many changes. One of the constant trends showed that users tend to more active on their SNP when offline social context is in flux.

Eszter Hargittai and Yu-li Patrick Hsieh (2009) Social network sites (SNSs) have become some of the most popular online destinations in recent years (comScore, 2009) and accordingly have started to attract the attention of academic researchers.

Bernoff (Forrester 2009) Research found that in fact nearly 75% of online adults trust email from people they know, while 60% rely on ratings and reviews and nearly half of online consumers trust social networking profiles of people they know.

Safko (2009) Concedes that business owners and marketers need to transform the way we touch our clients, and integrate ourselves into the very fabric of what they do every day. We have to embrace social networks, digital connections and the online experience and build an organization that embraces conversation and transparency.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Young People, Technology and Wellbeing (YAW-CRC) (2010) Review finds that there are a number of significant benefits associated with the use of SNS including: delivering educational outcomes; facilitating supportive relationships; identity formation; and, promoting a sense of belonging and self-esteem.

RESEARCH METHADOLOGY
NON PROBABILITY SAMPLING TECHNIQUE Under this technique, Snowball sampling method will be used. SAMPLE SIZE 250

DATA COLLECTION

PRIMARY DATA Questionnaires has been prepared. SECONDARY DATA Personal interviews will be taken and through journals and internet.

Study is restricted to Ludhiana only Inferences made from the study cannot be applied to other parts Sample size is small to generalize the study
