Procedure for preparing posters for the graphics printer The graphics printer requires an A1 PowerPoint layout. This template has the right dimensions for an A1 page. If you want to print this poster on a normal A4 printer to see what it looks like (which is highly recommended especially for proof reading) choose the scale to fit to paper option in the print menu. Step 1 Plan the poster

chemical engineering@edinburgh

Delete the text box with the instructions. chemical engineering@edinburgh and the logo are the only formal requirements. The rest is up to you. Have a look at some of last years examples in the 1st and 2nd year lab and the Kenneth Denbigh Building as well as at examples from MechEng on the walls in the Sanderson building. Dont cram in too much. Think in terms of about four graphics and four text boxes. Keep inside the shaded areas. Change the background colour, shading style etc. if you wish. Step 2 Edit title Edit the title at the top, but dont change the layout or font sizes. Use upper and lower case as in normal text. Step 3 Fetch graphics Paste graphics (and text) objects from other software (e.g. from Word or Excel). It is important that you use Edit - Paste Special to insert objects as type Picture (Enhanced Metafile works best, but other graphic formats are possible). Adjust box sizes to suit your plan. You cant edit the contents of picture boxes but your graphics will be printed correctly (which might not be the case otherwise). Step 4 Insert new text For text use text boxes, which you get from the Insert menu on the PowerPoint toolbar, but you have to get the font size right (this font size results in capital letters that are about 0.55 cm tall). The advantage of copy/pasting from Word or Excel (step 3) is that text automatically scales when you re-size the box. Step 5 Format and save poster When you are satisfied with the layout, save your poster as a PowerPoint file (dont forget to save it every now and then while you are actually editing your poster!). You can save in your SMS space (the M: drive); if you do this, make sure you know the name of the server for your SMS account. You can also save it on a disc, CD or USB memory stick and take it with you when you go to the JCMB Graphics Centre to print it. Before you do so, double-check the spelling and the over-all layout.

Procedure for printing posters

Step 1 Printing your poster Please print your poster in the IS resource centre in the Darwin Library. An A1 poster on standard paper costs 5 to print. Further information is available on the IS webpage (http://www.lrc.ed.ac.uk/printing.shtml). Be aware that there might be a printing queue and that it might take quite some time before it is the turn of your poster to be printed. Therefore, your printing job should be submitted at least a day in advance (i.e. by Thursday morning the latest). You will be reimbursed for the 5 when you give the receipt to the ETO. All posters have to be in submitted to the ETO by 5 p.m. on the day the before the poster presentation.
