WHAT IS AN UPS?
An Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is also known as a battery back-up, which provides emergency power and line regulation to the connected equipment by supplying power from a separate source when utility power is not available

GENERAL PURPOSE UPS

INDUSTRIAL PURPOSE UPS

INTERNAL PARTS

BASIC COMPONENTS OF UPS

HOW IT IS DIFFER FROM AN INVERTER

A TYPICAL SWITCHOVER TIME UPS : 2 4 ms Inverter : 3-5 sec.

HOW DOES A COMPUTER COMMUNICATE WITH A UPS?

Most UPSs have microprocessors that regulate some of the functions and communicate over a LAN cables.

TYPE OF UPS
1. The Offline/ standby UPS 2. The line interactive UPS 3. The standby-ferro UPS 4. The double conversion on-line UPS 5. The delta conversion on-line UPS

THE OFFLINE / STANDBY UPS

THE OFFLINE / STANDBY UPS

Benefits:
Low cost High efficiency Compact size

Limitations:
Uses battery during brownouts

THE LINE INTERACTIVE UPS

THE LINE INTERACTIVE UPS

Benefits: High reliability High efficiency Good voltage conditioning Limitations:
Can not be use over a range of 5kVA

THE STANDBY-FERRO UPS

THE STANDBY-FERRO UPS

Benefits: Excellent voltage conditioning High reliability Limitations:
Low efficiency Limited application because low unstable in efficiency and instability issues.

THE DOUBLE CONVERSION ON-LINE UPS

THE DOUBLE CONVERSION ON-LINE UPS

Benefits: Excellent voltage conditioning Limitations:
Lower efficiency Expensive under 5kVA.

THE DELTA CONVERSION ON-LINE UPS

THE DELTA CONVERSION ON-LINE UPS

Benefits:
Excellent voltage conditioning High efficiency

Limitations:
Impractical under 5kVA

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOUBLE CONVERSION AND DELTA CONVERSION ON-LINE UPS

COMMON POWER PROBLEMS

Power failure Voltage spike Over-voltage Line noise Harmonic distortion

POWER FAILURE

POWER FAILURE
Dropout :- It is a momentary (ms) loss of power typically caused by a temporary fault on a power line. Brownout :- It is a drop in voltage in an electrical power supply. Blackout :- It refers to the total loss of power to an area.

VOLTAGE SPIKE
These are short duration electrical transients in voltage in an electrical circuit.

CAUSES OF VOLTAGE SPIKES

Lightning strikes Power outages Tripped circuit breakers Short circuits

OVER-VOLTAGE

LINE NOISE
Random variations of one or more characteristics of any entity such as voltage, current, or data. A random signal of known statistical properties of amplitude, distribution, and spectral density. Loosely, any disturbance tending to interfere with the normal operation of a device or system.

HARMONIC DISTORTION
A distortion is the alteration of the original shape of an object, image, sound, waveform or other form of information or representation.

APPLICATIONS
Used in computer servers Used in railways Used in hospitals Used in telephone exchange
