European Imperialism

Dates are 3/20 and 3/22 (The Tuesday and Thursday after we get back from Spring break)

By Ziyuan Liu, Emily McLean, Ryan Dadmum, Ryan's mistress, Ron Paul tshirt kid

Timing (3/20 and 3/22)

We need to fill up 2 class periods, and there are five of us. So, I think we should aim to have 3 people go on Tuesday, and then 2 people on Thursday. If the third person needs more time, they can overlap into Thursday. Times are below and open for changes: Tuesday: Thursday 2:00 - 2:20 Ryan 2:00 - 2:10 Emily 2:20 - 2:40 Forrest 2:10 - 2:30 Ziyuan 2:40 - 2:50 Emily 2:30 - 2:50 Alex

Group VI: European Imperialism

Present on March 13th and 15th (we don't present on Wednesdays). Presentation needs to be at least one and a half periods to two full periods.
1. Prior to the late-19th-century surge in imperialistic fervor, European nations found a system that seemed to work called 'informal empire'. What is it, how did it work, and offer an example of 'informal empire' in action? I call this one: Ryan (and Forrest is working on this one too because this is the largest question/topic) 2. One of the key factors leading to the change from 'informal empire' to formal empire was the work of European missionaries. Examine the life and work of David Livingstone in this context. How did his work lay the groundwork for the establishment of formal empire later? MINE (emily) 3. Euope's industria; prowess made the work of imperialists easy. Show how European nations could use technological advantage to secure imperial territories. I'm doing this one. (Ziyuan) 4. Some Europeans were not shy about their imperialistic goals. Examine the case of Cecil Rhodes and show how he fulfilled his imperialistic dream ('from the Cape to Cairo') irrespective of the obstacles he econountered.
