Spark has plans to expand into Canada and the United Kingdom. Maxwell adds that Australia is showing up on the company’s radar.
Thinking of matters of sustainability, Maxwell feels people need to leave the earth better than they found it. His approach for the company is to find green initiatives that are commercially viable, ones that will drive the free market to go to the model.
Info Keith Maxwell:All Customer Service, Accounting and IT employees are found within the three floors of Spark's headquarters. This is an unusual path for the energy industry but he believes that organic growth is extremely rewarding and thus, it is a big point of pride for him. Keith says. “Within our Houston offices, we maintain our own customer service center. They aren't in a remote part of the world, and 80% of calls are answered within 20 seconds. Our customers appreciate quick service that's in a format they understand."

Maxwell recalls the early pendulum swing toward free markets and deregulation in the early 1990s. The gas deregulation pendulum swung back in the early 2000s. “Those same companies that benefited so greatly from deregulation became the tipping point that led states to look at re-regulating energy due to their excesses,” he said.

Currently, the company is investigating automatic meter products, which will soon replace all meter readers. These meters will provide real-time data to retail providers. Keith wants to take this data and deliver it in a way that meets the needs of Spark's customers. Access to this information will drive consumer behavior and will allow Spark to offer more flexible pricing to meet their needs.

“So what we do around green may differentiate us from some others in this space,” he claims. “We are constantly looking for viability around commercial applications. That, to me, is really the game changer. It’s not about just telling or showing everyone that you’re green. It’s how you apply it to a commercial model that can compete with the non-green products. That’s an internal challenge for us.”

A joke around the Spark Energy office is that Maxwell is called a “serial entrepreneur.” He explains that he doesn’t throw a new business idea to his team by asking if it makes any commercial sense. He says he’s tried a lot of different businesses and not all of them have succeeded. “Some lessons I have learned are more about what hasn’t worked than what has,” he recalls. “Success sometimes hides knowledge or lessons.”
