His interests include the role of landscape, art, culture, and philanthropy in civic space, urban design, and civic engagement. Arroyo has worked as worked for various artistic, cultural and design-related nonprofits, foundations, and government agencies across the United States and Europe, including The Getty Foundation, Los Angeles Conservancy, Ruder Finn Arts and Communications Counselors, Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Leveraging Investments in Creativity, National Trust for Historic Preservation, International Laboratory on Cultural Landscapes in Barcelona, and the Institute for Creative Sustainability in Berlin. Arroyo received his Masters in City Planning and a Certificate in Urban Design from MIT, as well as a Bachelors Degree in Journalism and Urban Planning and Development from USC, where he was a 2002 USC Board of Trustees Renaissance Scholar. Arroyo’s graduate thesis at MIT, Culture in Concrete: Art and the Re-imagination of the Los Angeles River as Civic Space, analyzed the role of art, culture, and informality along the Los Angeles River. It was awarded MIT´s Outstanding Master in City Planning Thesis Award, 2010. John has lived and/or worked in Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, DC, Barcelona, Berlin, New Orleans, and Buffalo. He believes in giving communities the tools to plan for themselves and that local assets are a community's best arsenal.
