Take accurate and quick action against all the warning signals. Inacourate or late action causes an explosion or a fire. Recognize fully meanings of waming signals in advance by referring to system diagrams or instruction manuals and be ready for accurate & quick action through regular training on countermeasures. Confirm an accurate functioning of warning signals regularly by testing them and an automatic start function of sealed oil pump for emergency. Inaccurate functioning leads to an explosion or a fire. Restore the previous state after testing. = Recover the generator hydrogen gas purity when [Low hydrogen gas purity] warning is given. Neglect causes an explosion. Air and He gases mixture ratio which has a risk of explosion lies between 4% and 75%, ‘The waming level is set at 92% because ofthe importance of early detection. ‘When generator hydrogen gas purty rate is going down 1) Increase the amount of scavenge gas to make the purity rate more than 92%. Alarm Actuation and Troubleshooting 6.1 Generator Hydrogen-Gas Pressure High or Low High: _Actuates when the generator hydrogen-gas pressure rises 0.2bar compared with the rated pressure of 3.1barg. An alarm will be issued caused by mal-adjustment or failure of the hydrogen-gas pressure regulating valve during automatic supply of hydrogen gas. In case the hydrogen-gas pressure regulating valve fails, the inlet and outlet valves of the regulating valve will be closed and the relief valve to the atmospheric relief pipe will be opened slowly while monitoring pressure on the pressure gauge for generator hydrogen gas. The hydrogen-gas pressure in the generator casing will be lowered to the rated pressure. Then check, adjust or repair the hydrogen-gas pressure regulating valve. Actuates when the generator hydrogen-gas pressure lowers 0.2bar compared with the rated pressure of 3.Ibarg. ‘An alarm will be issued in case the hydrogen-gas pressure regulating valve fails, a large amount of hydrogen leaks, low shaft seal oil pressure, or other causes. In case the hydrogen-gas pressure regulating valve fails, the inlet and outlet valves of the regulating valve are closed first. Next, the bypass valve of the regulating valve will be opened to supply hydrogen and pressure will be raised to the rated pressure. Then check, adjust or repair the hydrogen-gas pressure regulating valve. In case a large amount of hydrogen gas leaks, the leak location should be examined and repaired quickly. While the generator is in service, leakage can be examined by detecting sound, by operating a hydrogen-gas sensor, or by applying soapy water. The hydrogen-gas pressure inside the generator casing slightly rises or lowers depending on the generator hydrogen-gas temperature. A variance in hydrogen-gas pressure in the generator casing in case the temperature varies 1°C can be calculated as follows: where »_ BHP = 273+ P’: pressure variance (mmlHg/°C or barg/®C) when hydrogen-gas temperature varies 1°C B : atmospheric pressure (mmHg or barg) P : hydrogen-gas pressure inside generator casing (mmHg or barg) ts hyrogen-gas temperature inside generator casing (°C) Proprietary Information © Toshiba Corporation 2009, All Rights Reserved 14 of 18 E KC003014 TOSHIBA 6.2 Generator Hydrogen-Gas Temperature High This alarm actuates when temperature on the outlet side of the hydrogen-gas cooler rises to 54°C. An alarm will be triggered due to a generator overload, high temperature of cooling water, a failure of the hydrogen-gas temperature regulating valve, or other causes. Load fluctuation is troubleshooted ‘by looking the hydrogen-gas pressure and capacitance curve. A rise in cooling-water temperature requires checks of any trouble with the bearing cooling-water cooler or with valves of the hydrogen-gas cooler system. 6.3 Generator Hydrogen Gas Purity Low pyr 3 = Recover the generator hydrogen gas purity when [Low hydrogen gas purity] warning is given. Neglect causes an explosion. Ar and He gases mixture ratio which has a risk of explosion lies between 4% and 75%, ‘The waming level is set at 923 because ofthe importance of early detection, When generator hydrogen gas purty rate is going down: 41) Increase the amount of scavenge gas to make the purty rate more than 92%. In case the generator hydrogen gas purity lowers below 92%, the switch in the hydrogen-gas purity meter will actuate. The following things generate the fall of generator hydrogen gas purity . That is itis failure of a hydrogen-gas purity meter, moisture, and a warning device etc. Usually, the purity fall of generator hydrogen gas occurs when emergency seal oil pump operates and seal oil which dose not perform vacuum treat is applied. Also, in case the degree of vacuum in vacuum tank falls, it generates. In failure of a hydrogen-gas purity meter, there is the need of performing these check adjustment. 6.4 Hydrogen-Gas Supply Pressure Low The pressure switch actuates when supply pressure of hydrogen gas lowers below 3.7barg. While supplying hydrogen gas automatically and operating the generator, this alarm is generated when the pressure of a hydrogen gas cylinder declined. It aims at changing to a spare hydrogen gas eylinder. Proprietary Information © Toshiba Corporation 2009, All Rights Reserved 15 of 18 TOSHIBA E KC003014-a 6.5 Discharge Pressure of Main Seal Oil Pump Low The pressure switch actuates and automatically starts the emergency shaft seal oil pump when outlet pressure of the main seal oil pump lowers below service pressure -1.Obarg. ‘An alarm is triggered by a power fail, a failure of the direct-coupled motor, a faulty pressure regulating valve, a pump failure, a oil level falls by float valve failure in vacuum tank, leakage of a large amount of oil from the shaft seal oil system, or other causes. The pressure regulating valve may become faulty by a loose adjusting screw, or perhaps a broken spring in valve. The former cause can be troubleshooted by adjusting the adjusting screw. The latter requires isolation from the shaft seal oil system and check and adjustment of the faulty part. In the case of a pump failure, foreign matter that has entered the inside of the pump or other causes could disable pump rotation. In this case also, the faulty pump should be isolated from the shaft seal oil system and should be checked and adjusted, ‘The cause by which the float valve in vacuum tank breaks down is the case where a valve is closed ‘owing to damage on the device of a float valve of operation. This case requires isolation from the shaft seal oil system and check and adjustment of the faulty part. 6.6 Shaft-Seal Oil Differential-Pressure Low ‘The differential-pressure switch will actuate and an alarm will be actuated if the difference between supply pressure of shaft seal oil and generator hydrogen-gas pressure becomes smaller than 0.3bar. An alarm is triggered by a flaw of the differential-pressure regulating valve of shaft seal clogged shaft seal oil strainer, leakage of a large amount of oil through the shaft seal oil system, or other causes. A failure of the differential-pressure regulating valve of shaft seal oil could possibly be caused by a loose adjusting screw, dust or foreign matter caught between the cylinder and piston in the valve, or galling thereby hindering valve operation. ‘The adjusting screw trouble can be troubleshooted by adjusting the adjusting screw. Clogging of dust or foreign matter or piston galling requires isolation of the part from the shaft seal oil system for a check and adjustment. The differential-pressure gauge of shaft seal oil is corrected for a level difference (head) between the detection point of supply pressure of shaft seal oil and that of generator hydrogen-gas pressure. However, the differential-pressure switch of shaft seal oil is added with the head. 6.7 Vacuum Tank Vacuum Pressure Low ‘The pressure in vacuum tank decreases to -0.88bar, a vacuum switch will operate. ‘An alarm occurs owing to failure of a vacuum pump or a lot of air having entered in vacuum tank. Failure of a vacuum pump reduces hydrogen purity. However, since the rate to which hydrogen purity falls is very late, it does not result in an emergency. The disposal at this time is as follows. ‘The valve between vacuum tank and vacuum pump is closed. Rated-load operation of the ‘generator is possible in this state, Next, the inlet valve and outlet valve of oil which cool a vacuum pump are closed. Since connection of a vacuum pump and seal oil unit is cut off now, decomposition check or exchange can be performed. A generator can continue operation also in Proprietary information © Toshiba Corporation 2009, All Rights Reserved 16 of 18 E KC003014- TOSHIBA the state where there is no vacuum treatment by scavenging the hydrogen gas in a frame continuously or intermittently. ‘When air mixes in a vacuum tank, clamping bolts, such as an inspection hole and end cover, are bound tight again. Or a vacuum tank is separated from shaft oil system, and a leakage place is fixed. 6.8 Vacuum Tank Oil Level High and Low High .... When the oil level in a vacuum tank goes up 75mm or more from a normal oil level, a level switch operates, vacuum pump is stopped, and the alarm is issued. This is caused by malfunctioning of a float valve, a contaminant adhering to the sheet side of a valve, and inflow of the water into a tank. Malfunctioning of a float valve is caused by a failure of an operating device or a float. In this case, itis fixed by separating a vacuum tank from shaft seal oil system. When a contaminant adheres, the inlet valve of a ‘vacuum tank is closed and the oil level becomes somewhat low from a normal oil level (1.2-2.0in (30-50mm)), then the inlet valve is opened to see the oil level is stabilized in a normal oil level. When not returning normally even if this operation is repeated several times, a tank is separated from shaft seal oil system and check and repair is performed. Low .... When the oil level in a vacuum tank falls to 75mm or less from a normal oil level, a level switch operates, and the alarm is issued. This is caused by malfunctioning of a float valve, the fall of a vacuum, and the sudden increase of supply oil etc. Malfunctioning of a float valve occurs when a float valve is remained to be closed because of the damage of an operating device. In this case, itis necessary to separate a ‘vacuum tank from shaft seal oil system, and to fix it. When a vacuum falls, the 6.7th term is referred to. The sudden increase of supply oil may be caused by the damage of seal rings and a lot of oil leaked from shaft seal oil system. When such a phenomenon ‘occurs and check and repair cannot be performed, it is necessary to fix it by shutting down the generator. 6.9 Generator Drain ‘An alarm is issued when drain reaches the centerline on the sight gauge of the alarm device. This alarm is mainly for detection of water leakage through the cooling- water pipe of the hydrogen-gas cooler. It also detects oil leakage to the inside of the generator casing caused by a failure of the oil system, In the initial period of operation, humidity inside the generator casing sometimes flows as water drops. This phenomenon, however, becomes less prominent over the time. Water leakage from the cooling-water pipe of the hydrogen-gas cooler continues, so can be discriminated. Water leakage must be repaired by shutting down the generator. Proprietary Information © Toshiba Corporation 2008, All Rights Reserved 17 of 18 TOSHIBA E KC003014-a 6.10 Hydrogen Detraining Section Level As in “Drain in Generator” alarm, this alarm is issued when drain reaches the centerline on the sight gauge of the alarm device. This alarm is issued when hydrogen side oil on shaft seals overflows and may possibly leak into the inside of the generator in case the float valve of the float-trap faults and closes. When this alarm is issued, adjustment is made stabilizing the oil level in the oil level gauge by operating the float-trap bypass valve. If the hydrogen detraining tank Jevel high alarms, stop the operation of generator immediately, then decrease the generator gas pressure to less than to 10kPa and open the float trap bypass valve. While the bypass valve is open, the oil level gauge of the float trap tank shall be continually ‘monitored to ensure that the oil level is within the oil level gage or above, Make a check and repair by closing the inlet and outlet valves of the float-trap to isolate them from the shaft seal oil system. 6.11 Differential Pressure of Duplex Seal Oil Strainer High An alarm will be tiggered by the differential-pressure switch, which is actuated when the difference between inlet and outlet pressures of the duplex strainer installed at the inlet of the shaft seals, rises to 0.2bar. When an alarm is generated, read the differential-pressure gauge connected to the strainers to find out which strainer is clogged. Switching the strainer must be done speedily while monitoring supply pressure of shaft seal oil. For strainer switching, refer to the instruction manual. 12 Main Seal Oil Pump Overload In case the load current to the shaft seal oil pump exceeds the preset level, the overload relay actuates to stop the main seal oil pump and automatically actuate the emergency seal oil pump. Alarms are triggered by a power fail, a failure of the direct-coupled motor or the pump itself, a faulty pressure regulating valve or other causes. In the case of a pump failure, foreign matter that has entered the inside of the pump or other causes could disable pump rotation. A failure of the pressure regulating valve could be caused by ‘malfunction of an internal valve or other cause. A power or motor failure could be caused by low power supply voltage, omission of one phase of the power, motor bearing seizure, poor motor insulation, internal short circuit, or other causes. In the event of a pump overload, isolate the part from the shaft seal oil system and make a check and adjustment. Proprietary Information © Toshiba Corporation 2008, All Rights Reserved 3 09. 4. oa 18 of 18 E KC003014- TOSHIBA 6.13 Emergency Seal Oil Pump Overload In case the load current to the emergency seal oil pump exceeds the preset level, overload relay actuates to generate an alarm. Only an alarm is issued and the emergency shaft seal oil pump continues its operation under an overload. The same causes as those for an overload to the main shaft seal oil pump can be suspected. Take an immediate action to ensure supply pressure of shaft seal oil in the shaft seal oil system and stop the operation, ‘ontinuing operation without repairing a failure of a pump or other equipment may potentially cause motor seizure, Proprietary Information © Toshiba Corporation 2008, All Rights Reserved Stoft TOSHIBA E KC003014- Revision History (for internal use) REV. | REV.
