The confluence of ideas from analysis, geometry and
theoretical physics has always been a fruitful source of In addition, please arrange for two letters of

research training group "Analysis, Geometry, and mail.
String Theory" investigates the interplay of these
areas.

Geometric Analysis, a research field at the interface of

analysis and geometry, is by now a firmly established
branch of mathematics in its own right and has
produced important results. Research into mirror
symmetry and Calabi-Yau varieties has led, over the
past 15 years, to remarkable interactions between
string theory and geometry. Topics such as
deformation quantisation and solitons have brought
with them exciting developments on the border
between analysis and string theory.
Our research topics include: analysis on manifolds with
boundary or singularities; algebraic, complex,
differential, noncommutative and symplectic geometry;
free boundary problems and geometric evolution
equations; also noncommutative field theory,
topological string theories and integrable models.
Our teaching programme emphasises an
interdisciplinary approach: graduate students will be
educated in all three areas and will receive in-depth
training in at least two. The graduate centre also offers
lecture courses, research seminars and workshops.

Partners from various European and American

Universities cooperate with the graduate centre. They
support the training group by hosting the graduate
students, by advising them in their research or by
giving guest lectures.

Educational organisation

Working on interdisciplinary problems is becoming

more and more important in modern mathematics and
physics. Our study programme therefore aims at giving
graduate students a multidisciplinary education.
In the first three-semester phase, students will receive
basic training in all research fields of the group by
attending courses on partial differential equations,
algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and
theoretical physics.
In a second three-semester phase, students will
deepen their knowledge in two of these areas. To this
end, the graduate centre offers interdisciplinary
seminars covering research topics which are of interest
for two of these fields. In addition, students are
expected to follow advanced courses in two areas.

The educational programme will be enhanced by short

courses given by external experts. These courses are
tailored to address the current research, technology
and methods relevant to the PhD work.
A dedicated regular colloquium provides opportunities
for discussion and exchange between students,
lecturers, and researchers. A student seminar -
organised by the graduate students - addresses
questions of common interest.
In addition, the graduate students can take part in a
series of practical training sessions for "soft skills" in
areas such as presentation of scientific results, time
management or the preparation of job applications.

Part-time studies are possible.

Study abroad unit(s)

The members of the research training group will have

the opportunity to spend a period of at least three
months at a research institution abroad.
25 high-level partners from various European and
American universities have agreed to support the
research training group by hosting graduate students
and advising them during their stay.

Arrival support

The International Office offers a variety of services and

support for international students.
It helps students in finding suitable accommodation,
offers a pick-up service from the airport or railway
station, provides newly arrived students with a "study
buddy" and helps them deal with administrative issues.
Moreover, it organises an orientation week at the
beginning of each semester.

Services and support for

international students

The institute's visitor support and the coordinator of the

research training group provide assistance with
administrative and bureaucratic issues.
Every semester the International Office organises a
variety of events, workshops, and trips especially for
international PhD students. They range from cultural,
political or historical topics to BBQ or rowing.

Accommodation

The International Office, in cooperation with the

"Studentenwerk" (Student Services), offers an
accommodation service for all newly incoming
international students and scholars. This free service
can help you find a suitable room or apartment. In the
case that you don't need your accommodation for a
certain period of time, we can try to help you to rent out
your room.

About the university

Founded in 1831, the Higher Trade School of

Hannover started with only 64 students. Today, 28,000
students are enrolled at Leibniz Universitt Hannover.
It is an international university with currently more than
2,000 international students and about 400 partner
universities worldwide. Leibniz Universitt Hannover
has an academic staff of 2,900 at nine faculties with
more than 160 institutes. It is a member of TU9, the
nine outstanding German universities with an excellent
spectrum of engineering, technology, and science in
teaching and research. More than 90 subjects from the
fields of engineering, science, law, economics and
management, humanities and social sciences are
waiting for you at Leibniz Universitt Hannover.
Amongst these are plant biotechnology, mechatronics,
water resources and environmental management,
nanotechnology, European legal practice,
environmental planning, and European studies.
Leibniz Universitt Hannover is named after the
universal scholar and scientist Gottfried Wilhelm
Leibniz (1664-1716) who lived and worked in
Hannover.

About the city

Hannover smiles better...

Hannover, the capital of the federal state of Lower
Saxony, has just over half a million inhabitants and is
centrally located: Berlin, Hamburg and Gttingen are
easy to reach by bus or train. The Harz mountain
range, once divided by the German-German border, is
about an hour away.
As host to several fairs, Hannover is very open and
welcoming to international guests and partners. You
will find that most information is also available in
English and often in other languages, too. And if you
can't find your way you can always ask Hanoverians as
they will be glad to help you.
Hannover has a large pedestrian area in the city
centre, stretching from the central station down to
Steintor. For your first look around you can go on the
famous do-it-yourself tour called "Der rote Faden". All
you need to do is buy the Red Thread Guide at the
tourist information across from the central station and
follow the red painted line along the sidewalks around
the city centre. This 4.2 km tour will give you a first
impression of Hannover's main highlights.
Hannover is a very "green" city with many parks, which
are inviting places to barbecue or to relax. The
"Eilenriede" is one of Europe's largest city-forests and
is an ideal place for running or going for walks. Those
who want to relax can also do so at Maschsee lake.
The Maschsee festival takes place here every year in
August.
