The Eruv string is a technical solution for a ritualistic problem: the 39 Shabbat restrictions
on religious jews. During Shabbat (which lasts from sunset on Friday until sunset on Saturday)
carrying things between different houses is not allowed. To solve this issue and allow for a
functional community life (not just to move things, but also to enable communal gatherings,
dinners and parties in the public space), it has become custom to surround the area in which
Jews live with a symbolic thread, named Eruv (Hebrew - mixture or involvement), which
renders the area inside of it a joint private space. All of the houses inside the given area are
then regarded as one shared space, where the responsibility lies on the entire community and
free movement of people and things is in turn allowed.
Beginning on the Shabbat evening on Sep 1st, 2017 and for the duration of PHARMAKOS/N, an
Eruv string will be stretched around the Heizhaus and parts of the yard, alluding in a modest,
almost invisible way to this tradition of communal gathering and hospitality.

Die Eruv-Schnur ist eine technische Lsung fr ein rituelles Problem: die 39 Shabbat Gebote
fr religise Juden. Am Shabbat (der mit Sonnenuntergang am Freitag beginnt und mit
Sonnenuntergang am Samstag endet) ist es nicht erlaubt, Dinge von einem Haus zum anderen
zu bewegen. Um dieses Problem zu lsen und ein Miteinander zu gewhrleisten (nicht nur, um
Dinge zu transportieren, sondern auch um Treffen, Abendessen und Parties im ffentlichen
Raum zu ermglichen), wird der Faden rund um das Gebiet, in dem religise Juden leben, als
symbolisches Zeichen angebracht, der Eruv (hebrisch fr Mischung oder Einbindung),
und so das innenliegende Gebiet als gemeinsamer privater Raum markiert. Alle Huser
innerhalb der Begrenzung gelten nun als ein einziger Raum, in dem die Verantwortung von der
ganzen Gemeinschaft geteilt wird und sich jeder Mensch und jedes Ding frei bewegen kann.
Vom Shabbat-Abend des 1. September an ber die gesamte Dauer von PHARMAKOS/N hinweg
wird ein Eruv-Faden das Gebiet um das Heizhaus umfassen und fast unsichtbar auf diese
gemeinschaftsbildende und gastfreundliche Tradition verweisen.
