Aus Anlass des 250sten Geburtstages Ludwig van Beethovens
lädt das BEETHOVEN PASTORAL PROJECT Künstler auf der
ganzen Welt ein, sich durch ihre Auseinandersetzung mit
Beethovens „Pastorale“-Symphonie zu einem Netzwerk zu-
sammenzuschließen, mit einer Aufführung „ihrer Pastorale“
am Weltumwelttag der Vereinten Nationen 2020 ein Zeichen
gegen Umweltzerstörung zu setzen und für die im Pariser
Abkommen formulierten Nachhaltigkeitsziele der Vereinten
Nationen einzustehen.
On the occasion of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250 th anniversary
the BEETHOVEN PASTORAL PROJECT invites artists from all
over the world to form a network through their engagement
with Beethoven‘s ‘Pastoral‘ Symphony, to take a stance against
the degradation of the environment and to stand up for the UN‘s
sustainable development goals formulated in the Paris Agree-
ment with a performance of ‘their Pastoral‘ on United Nations
World Environment Day 2020.
DAS PROJEKT
Im Jahr 2020 feiert die Welt den 250. Geburtstag des Komponisten
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827). Beethoven wurde in Bonn
geboren – Bonn heute ist nicht nur Beethovenstadt, sondern
auch UNO-Stadt und Sitz des UN-Weltklimasekretariates.
Beethoven liebte die Natur. Sie war für ihn Ort der Entspannung,
der Einsamkeit und der Inspiration. Seine sechste Symphonie,
die „Sinfonia pastorale“, widmet sich der musikalischen Dar-
stellung des Verhältnisses von Mensch und Natur in harmo-
nischer Einheit. Heute ist die Natur in Gefahr: Der Mensch ist
auf dem Weg, seine Umwelt und seine Lebensgrundlagen zu
zerstören. Das BEETHOVEN PASTORAL PROJECT will aus dem
in der „Pastorale“-Musik formulierten romantischen Natur-
begriff heraus Aufmerksamkeit für das Thema „Mensch und
Natur“ heute schaffen und eine aktive Auseinandersetzung mit
den drängenden Fragen des Umweltschutzes und den Zielen
des Pariser Klimaabkommens anregen.
Das Projekt gliedert sich in zwei Phasen,
das PASTORAL NETWORK und den PASTORAL DAY:
→ Für das PASTORAL NETWORK sind Künstler aufgerufen,
ihre Auseinandersetzung mit der “Pastorale“ erlebbar zu
machen, visuell aufzubereiten und dieses Video mit einem
entsprechenden Statement auf die Homepage des Projektes
hochzuladen. Die NETWORK-Phase beginnt am 5. Juni 2018,
dem jährlichen UN-Weltumwelttag und gipfelt im UN-Welt-
umwelttag 2020, dem …
→ PASTORAL DAY am 5. Juni 2020. Dieser stellt den Höhe-
punkt und Abschluss des Projektes dar. So viele Künstler wie
möglich – einzeln, als Ensemble oder als Orchester – führen am
UN-Weltumwelttag 2020 Beethovens sechste Symphonie live auf
und bekennen sich zu Natur, Nachhaltigkeit und Umweltschutz.
THE PROJECT
In 2020 the world will celebrate the 250 th anniversary of
the birth of composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
Beethoven was born in Bonn, which today is not only the City
of Beethoven, but also a UN city and seat of the UN‘s Climate
Change Secretariat.
Beethoven loved nature. For him it was a place of relaxation,
solitude and inspiration. His Sixth Symphony, the ‘Pastoral‘,
musically depicts the harmonious unity between mankind
and nature. Today, nature is under threat and mankind is on
a course to destroy their environment and livelihood. The
BEETHOVEN PASTORAL PROJECT aims to draw attention
to the theme of ‘mankind and nature’, represented in the
romantic sense in the ‘Pastoral’ music, and to deal actively
with today’s urgent questions of environmental protection
and global sustainability, and achieving the aims of the Paris
Climate Agreement.
The project is divided into two phases:
the PASTORAL NETWORK and PASTORAL DAY:
→ for the PASTORAL NETWORK, artists are called upon to
make their engagement with the ‘Pastoral‘ publicly viewable by
uploading a video and corresponding statement to the Project
website. The NETWORK phase will start on the annual UN World
Environment Day, June 5 th, 2018, culminating on the UN World
Environment Day 2020, which marks the second phase:
→ PASTORAL DAY, on 5 th June 2020. This will be the culmi-
nation of the project. As many artists as possible - individually,
as ensembles or as orchestras - will perform Beethoven‘s Sixth
Symphony live and make a stand for nature, sustainability and
environmental protection.

Künstler in der ganzen Welt sind aufgefordert, das BEETHOVEN
PASTORAL PROJECT mitzugestalten. Online im PASTORAL
NETWORK und/oder live am PASTORAL DAY, dem UN-Welt-
umwelttag am 5. Juni 2020.
Der Aufruf ergeht an Orchester, Ensembles, Komponisten
und Musiker aller Genres, „ihre“ Pastorale zu spielen. Auch
Künstler anderer Sparten (z. B. Tanz, Literatur, Design, Film)
können sich beteiligen und sind wie Musiker aus Electro und
HipHop-Szene eingeladen, die auf der Website des Projektes
(www.beethoven-pastoral-project.de) vorhandenen Aufnahmen
als Kreativmaterial und Samples zu nutzen.

the BEETHOVEN PASTORAL PROJECT and BTHVN2020!
Artists around the world are encouraged to shape the
BEETHOVEN PASTORAL PROJECT: Online in the PASTORAL
NETWORK and/or live on the PASTORAL DAY, the UN World
Environment Day on 5 June 2020.
The call goes out to orchestras, ensembles, composers and
musicians of all genres to perform ‘their’ Pastoral. Artists from
other disciplines (eg dance, literature, design, film) can also
participate and are invited, as are musicians from the electro
and hip-hop scene, to make use of the material available on
the project website (www.beethoven-pastoral-project.com)
as creative material and samples.
