Introduction
The property of a material to resist impact is known as toughness. Due
to movement of vehicles on the road the aggregates are subjected to
impact resulting in their breaking down into smaller pieces. The
aggregates should therefore have sufficient toughness to resist their
disintegration due to impact. This characteristic is measured by impact
value test. The aggregate impact value is a measure of resistance to
sudden impact or shock, which may differ from its resistance to
gradually applied compressive load
Objective
To determine the impact value of the road aggregates
Equipment
1.steel cylinder
2.Tamping rod
3.mould
4.hammer
5.2.36mm sieve
Procedure
1. The cylindrical steel cup is filled with 3 equal layers of aggregate and
each layer is tamped 25 strokes by the rounded end of tamping rod
and the surplus aggregate struck off, using the tamping rod as a
straight edge.
2. The net weight of aggregate in the cylindrical steel cup is
determined to the nearest gram (WA) and this weight of aggregate is
used for the duplicate test on the same material.
3. The cup is fixed firmly in position on the base of the machine and
the whole of the test sample is placed in it and compacted by a
single tamping of 25 strokes of tamping rod.
4. The hammer is raised until its lower face is 380 mm. above the
upper surface of the aggregate in the cup, and allowed to fall freely
onto the aggregate 15 times, each being delivered at an interval of
not less than one second.
5. The crushed aggregate is removed from the cup and sieved on 2.36
mm. IS sieve until no further significant amount passes in one
minute.
6. The fraction passing the sieve is weighed to an accuracy of 0.1 g
(WB)

Discussion

1) There are a lot of advantages can be obtained from the AIV test, and
one of the advantages of aggregate impact test is that the test
equipment and the test procedure are simple and it can obtain the
resistance and impact of stones simulating field condition.

2) The test also can be done in short period of time whether it is at

construction site or stone quarry. Higher resistance to impact can be
provided in well-shaped cubical stones compared to flaky and
elongated stones.

Conclusion

After conducting this experiment, I have learn that it is important to

test the aggregates in order to construct a quality pavement for the
highway construction. In this laboratory activities, I have also learn that
how to set up an aggregate test in order to evaluate the strength
(toughness and durability) characteristics of the aggregates. Developing
critical analysis skills is very important to analyze and present the
experimental results appropriately.
