ately after that they want to bring some cultural icons into
their homes. In Indonesia a fine ikat will be high on the list
since textiles have always been prominent in the country’s
material culture. There are few other art forms in which
the nation’s cultural refinement is so immediately visible.
Ikats also bring an extra dimension that the finest batiks
and songkets cannot offer: the link to powerful traditions,
including ancestral cults and headhunting, the belief in the
