Über „For Strings. Stille Gebete“
w
in endloser Wiederholung.
in Zeit.
instrumentalen Teils unterstreichend. Der Abgang erfolgt vorzugsweise von
verschiedenen Teilen der Bühne.
w
The title ”Silent prayers” implies a rituality that has to be performed with
asceticism and religious feeling. On the other hand it also suggests a repetitive structure
consisting of quasi-stanzas, an endless repeating. We all the time hear one and the same
material developing and being put into new relations and contexts, a principle of forming
characteristic of both ritual ceremonies and ritual texts. Such a structure gives the
ie
possibility of discovering a investigating the numerous and complicated relations existing
between the different elements of the musical material derived from the basic proportion.
In the course of development the tone row gradually dissolves and melts away like
memory in time. First, it resolves into separate intervals and by the end of the
composition fades away completely, leaving only rhythm- and time-structures.
ev
Very significant is the role of silence in the “prayers”. The rests have to be
performed without hurry and very calmly. They are the pure introspective aspect of the
prayers themselves. The most important are, of course, the several general pauses that
should be no means be shortened. They are, in fact, the centres of the work, the true silent
prayers.
”For Strings” is a work in which the piano is treated as a string instrument, the
strings symbolising the string of the soul, but also the vocal chords that pray. I have not,
however, tried to give a exhaustive elaboration of all possible techniques of playing the
pr
strings of the piano. Quite on the contrary, I limited myself to a very narrow number of
techniques. These few techniques are repeated while all the time being set into new
circumstances and relations both to each other and to playing techniques of the other two
instruments.
Due to the specific structure of the basic proportion each of the three instruments
finishes playing in its own time. When having finished playing, the performer calmly but
not slowly leaves the stage, underlining the independence of each of the instrumental
parts. The exit is preferable made from different parts of the stage.
