,L übecks schönste Tochter“
T rav em ü n d e ist ein S tadtteil Lübecks, d er als „Lübecks schönste
Tochter" w eltbekannt ist. Das kleine O stseebad hatte aber schon sehr
früh sein Eigenleben.
Bereits seit 1204 b e s itz t T ra v e m ü n d e e in e n eig e n en H afen, auch
w e n n die T ra v em ü n d er erst einige J a h rh u n d e rte s p ä te r die erste
Badeanstalt g rü n d eten u n d die Dampfschifffahrtslinien das Dorf als
Zielhafen wählten. 1802 w u rd e T ravem ünde zu m Seebad u n d hatte
als solches bald einen internationalen Ruf.
T r a v e m ü n d e b e s i t z t e in e b r e ite S t r a n d p r o m e n a d e u n d ist b ei
U rla u b e rn ü b e ra u s beliebt: die sch n uck elig en A ltstadtgassen , die
historische Fassadenfront entlang der Trave, die Alte Vogtei u n d der
Alte Leuchtturm m achen den Reiz der Ostseeperle aus.
U n d die Sportler? Die sind von der Travemünder Woche ganz bestim m t
begeistert! Seit 1889 findet diese Veranstaltung jedes Jahr Ende Juli
statt u n d ist nicht n u r bei Seglern aus D eutschland bekannt.

Die Zahl d er Gäste ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten ständig gestiegen.
Am Jubiläum im Jahr 2009 haben m eh r als 1000 Boote teilgenom m en.

Der historische Viermaster Passat, ein Flying P-Liner vo n 1911, w acht
m it sein en vier, bis z u 56 M eter h o h e n M asten als W a h rze ich en
Travem ündes über die Wettfahrten. Im Jahr 1959 h at die H ansestadt
Lübeck d a s alte Schiff g e k a u ft u n d es so v o r d e m A b w ra c k e n 2
gerettet. Die Viermastbark steht heute u nter Denkm alschutz u n d hat
einen festen Liegeplatz an der Travem ündung.

D e r A lte L e u c h t t u r m v o n T r a v e m ü n d e is t e in e r d e r ä lte s te n
L euchttürm e Deutschlands. U m 1330 ist erstm als in alten U rk u n d e n 3
v on ihm die Rede. N ach der Zerstörung d urch dänische Truppen im
Jahr 1534, haben holländische M aurer
d e n T u rm fü n f Jah re s p ä te r w ie d e r
aufgebaut. Seit 1922 ist der Leuchtturm
ein technisches K ulturdenkm al.

Strandleben und Strandkörbe

T ravem ünde besitzt einen breiten, w eißen S trand m it sehr feinem
Sand, A m Strand fallen vor allem die vielen Strandkörbe auf, die so
häufig an den Sandstränden der N ord- un d Ostsee zu finden sind.
Doch w as ist ein Strandkorb eigentlich? Das ist ein ganz typisches
Sitzmöbel für den Strand, das wie ein verkleideter Sessel aussieht. Er
soll Schutz vor Sonne und W ind bieten.
Der E rfinder des S tran d ko rb s w a r W ilhelm B artelm ann, ein Hof-
K orbm acherm eister 4 au s Rostock. Im Jahr 1882 sollte er fü r eine
rheum akranke Dam e eine bequem e Sitzgelegenheit für den Strand
machen. Bartelmann hatte auch gleich eine Idee, der erste Strandkorb
w ar fertig!
Heute sind die Strandkörbe, die U rlauber am Travem ünder Strand
mieten können, aus Naturrohr, Kunststoff oder Rattan gemacht. Sie
sind farbig u n d b u n t dekoriert, m anche sind sogar herzförmig!

Paul Beneke, ein deu tsch er H anseadm iral, ist im Krieg d er H anse
gegen England (1470-1474) tätig. Schon 1468 besiegt er die englische
Flotte in d er Seeschlacht vo n Zw een u n d auch danach kapert er viele
englische Schiffe, u.a. m it dem Peter von Danzig.
Vor allem Großbritannien, Frankreich, die H ansestädte u n d die USA
stellen zu jener Zeit Kaperbriefe aus.

IJnd heute?
Die Deklaration von Paris aus dem Jahr 1856 beendet die Ausstellung
von K aperbriefen. H e u tz u tag e gibt es also keine F reibeuter mehr.

Eine Stadt, drei N obelpreisträger

Lübeck k a n n au f drei N o b e lp reisträg e r stolz sein: T hom as M ann
bekom m t 1929 d en L iteraturnobelpreis. Willy B randt k an n sich im
Jahr 1971 ü ber d en F riedensnobelpreis freuen. U n d G ü n ter Grass
zeichnet m an 1999 m it dem Literaturnobelpreis aus.
T h o m a s M a n n is t in L ü b e c k g e b o r e n u n d v e r le b t a u c h s e in e
Ju g en d jah re hier. Das ist au c h bei Willy B ran d t d e r Fall. G ü n te r
Grass hingegen zieht erst nach Lübeck, als er 68 Jahre alt ist.
Ihre H äuser gelten heute als A nziehungspunkte für Experten aus der
ganzen Welt u n d sind als A usstellungs- u n d Forschungsstätten zu
besuchen.

Thom as M ann und die Stadt
D as L ite ra tu rm u s e u m „ B u d d e n b ro o k h a u s " b e fin d e t sich in d er
M e n g s tra ß e 4. D as alte H a u s v o n T h o m a s u n d H e in ric h M a n n
erinnert m it seinem N am en an d en bekannten Rom an vo n Thom as
M ann. Von 1842 bis 1891 ist d as G e b ä u d e im Besitz d er Fam ilie
Mami. D anach gibt es dort eine B uddenbrook-Buchhandlung.
Im M ärz 1942 zerstören Bombenangriffe das H aus fast kom plett, erst
m ehr als zehn Jahre später b au t m an es w ieder auf. H eute ist es ein
w ic h tig e s , im J a h r 2002 m it d e m E u ro p ä is c h e n M u s e u m s p re is
ausgezeichnetes M useum . Hier findet d er Besucher einen Shop m it
allen lieferbaren W erken der Schriftstellerfamilie Mann.
Doch wie ist das Verhältnis zw ischen dem A utor Thom as Mama u n d
d e r S ta d t bzw . d e m M eer? Die w o h lh a b e n d e K a u fm an n sfa m ilie
M ann verbringt jedes Jahr vier Wochen am Meer, in Travemünde. Der
Schriftsteller liebt seine Som m erferien an d er See, geht regelm äßig
z u m M u s i k te m p e l u n d g e n i e ß t d ie M u s ik a m S tr a n d . D ie se
Erinnerungen spiegeln sich in seinem Rom an Buddenbrooks wider.

Leuchttürm e dienen zu r Schiffsnavigation: das blinkende Licht w eist
d en Booten d en Weg in d en Llafen u n d gibt den Seefahrern eine sehr
w ic h tig e N a v ig a t io n s h i l f e . N a c h t s w a r n e n L e u c h t tü r m e v o r
g e f ä h rlic h e n S a n d b ä n k e n u n d R iffen, ta g s ü b e r d ie n e n sie z u r
Orientierung.
Die ersten L euchttürm e leuchten im M ittelmeerraum . U m 300 v. Chr.
b au en die Ä gypter den ersten Turm bei Alexandria.
Seitdem w erd en viele Leuchttürm e errichtet. Die Lübecker bauen im
Jahr 1222 einen F euerturm in Falsterbo (Schweden) u n d auch andere
Flansestädte, wie W ismar (1266), H am b u rg (1286), Stralsund (1306),
Rostock (1348) u n d D anzig (1482), errichten in Folge ihre eigenen
Leuchtfeuer.
Vor allem zw ischen 1500 u n d 1800 entstehen viele Leuchtfeuer. Es
sind aber im m er n u r Holz- u n d B alkengerüste1 m it einem einfachen
Feuer auf d er obersten Plattform.

Fresnel, ein französischer Ingenieur, schafft es ungefähr u m 1820, die
L e u c h t k r a f t n o c h m a ls z u e r h ö h e n . D u rc h d ie A u f t e i l u n g in
v e rs c h ie d e n e Z o n e n e rh a lte n die o p tis c h e n L insen eine grö ß ere
Tragweite 2. D am it beginnt der Bau von zahlreichen Leuchttürm en in
der ganzen Welt.
D ie s e B a u p e r i o d e d a u e r t u n g e f ä h r b is z u r Z e it d e s E rs te n
Weltkrieges. H eute bau t m an neue Leuchttürm e norm alerw eise nur,
w e n n sie alte Leuchttürm e ersetzen müssen.
Jeder L euchtturm besitzt seine eigene „Sprache". D enn jedes Feuer
