Gewerbe eine neue Blüte erlebt – das des Privatdetektivs.
Über zwei Jahre hinweg haben sich die Filmemacher an die Fersen eines
dieser privaten Ermittler geheftet. Rajesh Ji ist der Anführer eines kleinen
Teams, das landesweit tätig ist. Rajesh Ji ist trotz seines Übergewichts ein
begeisterter Tänzer – den heimlichen Traum, als Tanzstar Karriere zu machen,
hat er niemals aufgegeben. Indische Song-and-Dance-Musik spielt in sei-
nem Alltag – und damit auch im Film – eine wichtige Rolle.
Drei Fälle hat Rajesh Ji aufzuklären. Im ersten geht es um Falschmünzerei,
das Delikt mit der höchsten Zuwachsrate in Asien; im zweiten um Ehebruch
und häuslichen Missbrauch; im dritten um einen der brutalsten Dreifach-
morde, die in Kalkutta je begangen wurden. Bei ihren Ermittlungen kom-
men die Detektive mit Vertretern aller Schichten in Kontakt, mit Geschäfts-
leuten ebenso wie mit kleinen Handwerkern aus den Slums oder reichen
Ehefrauen.
Entspannung finden Rajesh und seine Kollegen beim Tanz. Regelmäßig
treffen sie sich einmal in der Woche, um für eine Talent-Show im Fernsehen
zu proben. Und tatsächlich erreicht sie eines Tages der Anruf: Sie wurden
auserwählt, an dem Tanzwettbewerb teilzunehmen …

For their documentary, the filmmakers spent two years following closely on Filmografie

that is active throughout the country. An enthusiastic dancer in spite of his TV-Dokumentation
extra pounds, Rajesh Ji has never given up his secret dream of a career in 2006 WE ARE THE INDIANS

dance. Indian song-and-dance music is writ large in his everyday life – and 2008 STORM IN THE SAHARA
so too in this film during the course of which, Rajesh Ji has three cases to Dokumentarfilm
solve. The first involves the forging of coins, which is Asia’s fastest-growing 2011 THE BENGALI DETECTIVE
offence; the second is a case of adultery and domestic violence and the
third concerns the murder of three people – one of the most brutal that
Kolkata has ever seen. During the course of their investigations the detec-
tives come into contact with people from all walks of life and castes – from
businesspeople, to craftspeople living in the slums, to wealthy wives.
Rajesh and his colleagues like to let off steam by dancing. They meet regular-
ly once a week to rehearse for a television talent show. One day the phone
does indeed ring: they have been selected to take part in a dance competition.

Calcutta est l’une des mégapoles du monde. Cette zone urbaine de l’état
fédéral indien du Bengale occidental compterait plus de quinze millions
d’habitants. Etant donné la complexité des infrastructures, beaucoup de
gens n’ont plus confiance dans les autorités de l’état si bien qu’ici, comme
dans d’autres villes indiennes, une profession traditionnelle connaît un
renouveau de prospérité : celle de détective privé.
Les cinéastes ont suivi l’un d’eux dans toutes ses allées et venues pendant
deux ans. Rajesh Ji est à la tête d’une petite équipe qui intervient dans tout
le pays. Malgré son embonpoint, Rajesh Ji est un danseur passionné et il n’a
jamais renoncé à son rêve secret de faire carrière dans ce domaine. La
musique de chanson et de danse indienne joue un rôle important dans sa
vie quotidienne et donc aussi dans le film.
Rajesh Ji a trois affaires à élucider au cours du film. Dans la première, il s’agit
de la fabrication de fausse monnaie, un délit qui se répand de plus en plus
en Asie ; la deuxième affaire est un adultère avec violence conjugale ; la troi-
sième concerne un triple meurtre, le plus brutal qui ait jamais eu lieu à
Calcutta. Au cours de leurs enquêtes, les détectives entrent en contact avec
des représentants de toutes les couches sociales, des hommes d’affaires
tout comme de modestes artisans des slums ou de riches épouses.
Rajesh et ses collègues trouvent la détente dans la danse. Ils se rencontrent
régulièrement, une fois par semaine, pour répéter en vue d’un show télé-
visé d’amateurs de talent. Et un jour, ils reçoivent effectivement l’appel tant
attendu : ils sont sélectionnés pour prendre part au concours de danse …
