On 3 October 1990, the Accession Treaty was signed in Berlin, in which the DDR renounced its state
sovereignty and joined the Federal Republic of Germany. This step completed German reunification, the
development there had started with the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig in the DDR from September
4, 1989 and reached its symbolic climax with the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9.
Europe was divided into West and East and the border ran through the middle of Germany: in 1949, two
German states emerged – the Federal Republic of Germany and the DDR. The division of the country
until 1990 was a consequence of the Second World War and the Cold War between East and West. The
people in the Eastern Bloc could neither freely freevote nor, with exceptions, travel to the West.
Because of many kinship relationships, this was perceived as a constant limitation in divided Germany.
