Cleanness of Components and Load Carriers
Definitions and Test Procedures

Introduction
To satisfy the ever-increasing demands on the cleanness and neat workmanship of components it is necessary to
define rules which are binding upon all the suppliers and parties involved in the production process in order to
guarantee compliance with the said demands up to the moment of assembly. These rules define the degree of
cleanness of both, components and load carriers and allow the components to be directly installed without having
to be cleaned again before assembly.
PN 132 does not replace PTL 14045 which describes the testing of components with defined permissible residual
contaminations.

1 Field of application and purpose

The present Standard describes the degree of cleanness of both finished components and modules as well as the
respective load carriers. It applies to all components to be newly developed and shall be observed by
Development, Purchasing, Purchased-Part Quality Planning, Process Auditing and all Suppliers. It must be reflected
in Performance/Component Specifications, Producibility Certificates and Process Auditing documents. The present
Standard does not cover any components whose surfaces must not be cleaned in order to maintain corrosion
protection (e.g. BiW sheet-metal parts). Component classification by cleanness degrees is to be done by the SE
Teams and documented in the respective component’s Performance Specification.

4 Degrees of cleanness

4.1 Component classification

In order to be able to comply with the cleanness demands on the various components corresponding cleanness
degrees (SG) have to be stipulated by the SE Teams. These degrees range from SG1 to SG4. The classification
system is represented in Table 1 which also shows the demands connected with each degree of cleanness. For
each component, the degree of cleanness is to be documented in the respective Performance Specification.

4.2 Checking of compliance with the degrees of cleanness

Compliance of the components with the cleanness demands shall be checked:

- at the Supplier’s before delivery of the components to PAG

- at receipt of the components at PAG
- during component handling at PAG until final installation

The cleanness check conditions at the Supplier’s and the type of certificate to be drawn up shall be defined in the
respective Performance/Component Specifications and/or corresponding Action Plans. Compliance at PAG will be
checked in the course of Process Audits.

Cleanness shall be checked by means of the wipe test described in para. 7.2. It serves for process validation and
is used as a tool for random sampling. If the wipe test reveals that a component is not in compliance with the
required degree of cleanness suitable action shall be taken to remedy the problem. The measures to be taken
shall be stipulated in the Action Plans and internal auditing documents.

5 Demands on component handling

The following prescriptions are to be observed up to the moment the components are installed:

5.1 Fluid-bearing components

The openings of fluid-bearing components shall be closed by means of plugs.
During plugging and unplugging no abrasion is allowed to occur at the openings. The plugging elements shall be
such that they do not contaminate the components.

5.2 Repacking / unpacking

The components may be repacked and/or unpacked only if they are not contaminated either in the process or
during subsequent storage.

PN 132 2004-03

5.3 Storage / Provision for assembly

The components shall be packed immediately after production. During storage/intermediate storage they shall be
protected against contamination.
If possible, the components shall be protected by covers or similar devices. If not, suitable alternative protective
measures are to be taken.

5.4 Handling
To avoid damage of the load carrier or the component itself through sharp edges suitable additional packing
material is to be used.

6 Load carriers and loading devices

The cleanness demands on the load carriers and loading devices must be high enough to allow the cleanness
demands on the respective components to be fulfilled.

The cleanness degrees defined for the load carriers and loading devices shall be met as follows:

- at the Supplier’s while the components are loaded

- at receipt at PAG
- during repacking at PAG
- during the entire handling process at PAG until final installation of the components

Before being refilled, load carriers shall be cleaned if they do not meet the defined degrees of cleanness.

After having been completely emptied, the load carriers shall be protected against contamination until refilling.
Load carriers shall be „clean swept“ at the least, i.e. be free of coarse dirt, non-reusable packaging and any
foreign matter whatsoever.

The load carriers and loading devices shall be made of stain-resistant and abrasion-proof materials.

7 Wipe test
7.1 Definition of cleanness degrees
The cleanness degrees are listed in the table below:

Table 1. Degress of cleanness

Wipe
Degree test Classification examples Additional requirements
rating
SG1 1 Components subject to residual-dirt provisions • SG1 components must not be
submitted to a wipe test.
• The component must comply with PTL
14045 from manufacture to installation.
SG2 2 • Components with machined functional
surfaces
• Components with unprotected
friction/roller bearings
• Directly visible exterior/interior
components
SG3 3 Assorted exterior or interior components
which are not directly visible
SG4 3 • Loose components not subject to any
specific requirements (e.g. screws, bolts,
clamps etc.)

Applicable • Of course, the protection requirement can also be met by providing for additional
to all degrees of protective measures such as e.g. using foil wrappings, lining the load carriers with
cleanness cardboard material or the like.
• The packing (LT’s [Load carriers], LT coverings , GP’s [Basic pallets], wrapping material)
shall be chosen in such a way that the component satisfies the respective cleanness
demand when wipe-tested.
• The equipment (e.g. work places, conveyors, tools) shall be chosen in such a way that the
component satisfies the respective cleanness demand when wipe-tested.
• Such processes as commissioning, repacking etc. shall be organized in such a way that
the component satisfies the respective cleanness demand when wipe-tested.

7.2 Wipe test

Components of the SG1 category may not be wipe-tested for the risk of contamination by fuzz!
SG2 components and load carriers destined for SG1 or SG2 components may be cleaned using non-fuzzing wipes
(Kimwipes) by Kimberly-Clark only. If no Kimwipes can be obtained, comparable wipes shall be used after having
been presented to PAG Materials Technology for prior release. SG3 and SG4 components may be tested using
conventional white paper tissues. All wipes shall be kept in a place protected against contamination. The test
station shall be lighted by a light source of at least 900 Lux (corresponding to the light-conditions at a regular
office work place).
1. Visual check: no foreign matter, humidity, oil or grease residues shall be permitted. In case of components
which feature functional surfaces and for which no residual-dirt demands have been defined it must be made
sure that no foreign matter exists on the surface.
2. To test a load carrier it shall be arranged in its filling position. A roughly 10 cm long area on the component
and in the interior contamination-relevant area of the load carrier and/or its cover shall be wiped with a new
paper tissue. Then the portion of the paper tissue used for wiping shall be compared with the colour samples
(rating: 1 to 5) and classified in accordance with the respective shade of grey. In borderline cases always take
the higher value. Any residual fuzz from the paper tissue shall be removed from the component.
