Ilmenau
Über allen Gipfeln Above all summits
ist Ruh, it is calm.
in allen Wipfeln In all the tree-tops
spürest du you feel
kaum einen Hauch; scarcely a breath;
die Vögelein schweigen im Walde, The birds in the forest are silent,
warte nur, balde just wait, soon
ruhest du auch! you will rest as well!
Wandrers Nachtlied II
(same text as Ilmenau)
Der Wanderer
Ich komme vom Gebirge her, I come down from the mountains,
Es dampft das Tal, es braust das Meer, The valley dims, the sea roars.
Ich wandle still, bin wenig froh, I wander silently and am somewhat unhappy,
Und immer fragt der Seufzer, wo? And my sighs always ask "Where?"
Die Sonne dünkt mich hier so kalt, The sun seems so cold to me here,
Die Blüte welk, das Leben alt, The flowers faded, the life old,
Und was sie reden, leerer Schall, And what they say has an empty sound;
Ich bin ein Fremdling überall. I am a stranger everywhere.
Wo bist du, mein geliebtes Land, Where are you, my dear land?
Gesucht, geahnt, und nie gekannt? Sought and brought to mind, yet never known,
Das Land, das Land so hoffnungsgrün, That land, so hopefully green,
Das Land, wo meine Rosen blühn; That land, where my roses bloom,
Ich wandle still, bin wenig froh, I wander silently and am somewhat unhappy,
Und immer fragt der Seufzer, wo? And my sighs always ask "Where?"
Im Geisterhauch tönt's mir zurück, In a ghostly breath it calls back to me,
"Dort, wo du nicht bist, ist das Glück." "There, where you are not, there is your
happiness."
Three Latin Motets
Jesu, dulcis memoria
Laudate Dominum
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Where charity and love are, God is there.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Christ's love has gathered us into one.
Exultemus, et in ipso iucundemur. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him.
Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum. Let us fear, and let us love the living God.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. And may we love each other with a sincere heart.
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Where charity and love are, God is there.
Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur: As we are gathered into one body,
Ne nos mente dividamur, caveamus. Beware, lest we be divided in mind.
Cessent iurgia maligna, cessent lites. Let evil impulses stop, let controversy cease,
Et in medio nostri sit Christus Deus. And may Christ our God be in our midst.
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Where charity and love are, God is there.
Simul quoque cum beatis videamus, And may we with the saints also,
Glorianter vultum tuum, Christe Deus: See Thy face in glory, O Christ our God:
Gaudium quod est immensum, atque probum, The joy that is immense and good,
Saecula per infinita saeculorum. Amen. Unto the ages through infinite ages. Amen.
Le nozze di Figaro
Non più andrai
Non più andrai, farfallone amoroso, You shall frolic no more, lustful butterfly,
notte e giorno d'intorno girando; Day and night flitting to and fro;
delle belle turbando il riposo Disturbing ladies in their sleep
Narcisetto, Adoncino d'amor. Little Narcissus, Adonis of love.
Non più avrai questi bei pennacchini, No longer will you have these beautiful feathers,
quel cappello leggero e galante, That light, romantic cap,
quella chioma, quell'aria brillante, That hair, that glowing countenance,
quel vermiglio donnesco color. That rosy, womanly complexion.
