Tochter eines wohlhabenden Mannes (also eine Jungfrau, die noch
unter der Botmäßigkeit ihres Vaters steht) umwerben und mitein-
ander [um sie] streiten wollen, die treiben selbst [von sich zu
Hause] Rinder und fette Schafe fort, als Schmaus für die Anver-
wandten der Jungfrau, und geben (der Witwe wie der Jungfrau, die
sie umwerben wollen) glänzende Geschenke5.
Die Umwerber der Penelope umwerben sie nicht èx fjteyáqoio
(n 390), sondern im Haus der gegen ihren Willen (âexaÇojbiévr] r 133)
Umworbenen (evi ¡leyáqoioiv nil), womit ihre Umwerbung zu einer
Erpressung wird : indem sie als Gäste Vieh und Gut der Besitzerin
aufzehren (z.B. X 116) und ruinieren (z.B. n 125), wollen sie ihre
Entscheidung erzwingen. Zwar geben auch sie Geschenke - offen-
bar aber nur, um sich gegenseitig auszustechen (vgl. n 77, cp 162,
v 289 f.). Doch ihre Geschenke wiegen den Schaden nicht auf, den
sie tun:
