• Wie geht es dir? (not: “du“!) • How are you?

• Gut, und dir? (not: “du“!) • Good, and you?

• Mir ist kalt/warm. (not: “Ich bin kalt“!) • I am cold/warm.

• Mir ist heiß. (not: Ich bin heiß. = I am sexy.) • I am hot.

• Es/Das macht Spaß. (not: Das ist Spaß.) • It’s/That’s fun.

 Das Verb ist an zweiter Stelle! The verb is in second position!
4 • Heute gehe ich zum Strand. • Today I go to the beach.
• Gestern war ich am Strand. • Yesterday I was at the beach.

5 • Also… ich finde das gut. • Well... I think this is good.
• Es schneit. Also gehen wir nicht raus. • It is snowing. Thus we don’t go outside.

Es gibt… + Akkusativ There is/ There are …

Es gab…+ Akkusativ There was/There were…
6 • Es gibt viele Biersorten in Deutschland. • There are many beer brands in Germany.
• Es gab 10 verschiedene Wurstsorten. • There were 10 different types of sausages.
• Es gab einen Unfall. • There was an accident.

Wer? / Wo? Who? / Where?

7 • Wer kommt mit? • Who comes along?/ Who joins?
• Wo ist Susi? • Where is Susi?

 Ich erinnere mich nicht. Oder: Ich weiß es nicht mehr. I don’t remember.
(lit.: I don’t know anymore.)

• „Erinnerst du dich an Lars?“ - „Nein, ich • “Do you remember Lars?” - “No, I don’t

• Er hat früher viel gemalt. • He used to paint a lot.

Stunde VS Uhr “Stunde” is used for durations and “Uhr” is used for
points in time as “o’clock” in English

• Wir haben 5 Stunden auf dich gewartet! • We waited 5 hours for you!
• Es ist jetzt 5 Uhr morgens. • It’s 5 (o’clock) am now.

 Präsenz + seit + Dativ “seit” can mean “since” or “for” and it’s used with
the present tense in German

• Ich lebe seit 2001 in Australien. • I have lived in Australia since 2001.
• Er arbeitet seit 5 Jahren bei BMW. • He has been working at BMW for 5 years.

12 • Sie wohnt seit einem Jahr in München. • She has been living in Munich for one year.

Vergangenheit + vor + Dativ “vor” means “ago” and is used with the past tense
• Ich bin vor 5 Jahren nach Deutschland gezogen. • I moved to Germany 5 years ago.
• Er hat vor 4 Jahren geheiratet. • He got married 4 years ago.
• Sie sind vor einer Woche nach Afrika geflogen. • They went/flew to Africa one week ago.

*das Präsenz = the present tense
