Working closely with the Almargem association, the resort has designed a
simple and beautifully illustrated guide comprising 10 destinations, each
with 10 recommendations of things to do and places to go. The 'plus one'
destination is VILA VITA Parc's sister estate Herdade dos Grous, in the
heart of the Alentejo countryside.

After visiting the rugged clifftops and stunning beaches of the region's west
coast in the last edition, V Life set off in the opposite direction and caught a
glimpse of the charming area surrounding the Guadiana river, in the eastern
Algarve. Number five in the guide, the destination of Guadiana is filled with
examples of its cultural and natural heritage, alongside the traditional
practices that are still very much a part of the area around this major river
that separates Portugal and Spain.
For guests to discover the area, all they have to do is pick up their copy at
VILA VITA Parc reception and take themselves off on their own trip.
Extras include a tour guide, a delicious picnic basket, a private butler, a
rental car including a selection of classic cars or a Harley-Davidson or
even the resort's chauffeur-driven Bentley, at an additional cost. The
reception's friendly staff will be happy to provide you with a few suggestions
on restaurants, but the resort also has a gastronomy guide in the pipeline,
which will complement Algarve 10+1 by providing excellent
recommendations on authentic Algarvean eateries.
The first stop in our guide is Alcoutim, a pretty historical town and
municipality near the Alentejo border. A hillside town of cobbled streets,
small squares and a paved promenade along the river front, it's also home to
various historical landmarks, including the Old Castle, the New Castle and,
in Cortes Pereira, Lavajo megalithic stones. Overlooking the Guadiana river,
the New Castle actually dates back to the 14th century and was named a
Monument of Public Interest in 1993. It currently houses a small
archaeological museum, whose display is a testament to the town's
prehistoric legacy. Whilst here, visit Alcoutim's Pego do Fundo, a pretty
inland river beach that's the only one of its kind in the Algarve.

A beautiful area to explore, these wetlands are a natural habitat for a rich
diversity of fauna and flora, and provide a great opportunity to observe the
area's marvellous wildlife.Through nature observation facilities, visitors can
spot the wonderful greater flamingos and many species of ducks, whilst the
Interpretation Centre offers detailed information on the area and the best
routes to explore the marshlands.
With historical significance due to its position on the banks of the
Guadiana, this area is steeped in tradition, much of which is a testament to
its strong fishing heritage and the people's reliance on the river. The famous
flor de sal sea salt is still produced in the laid-back town of Castro Marim,
but this is just one of the traditional practices that can still be found here,
which include lace-making and basket-weaving.
The River Museum in the village of Guerreiros do Rio, around 8km from
Alcoutim, for example, displays photographs, miniature replicas of boats
and other objects that are a window into the history of the river and its
fishing activities, whilst the sleepy fishing villages dotted around the
Guadiana provide a glimpse of how things once were in this beautiful part
of the Algarve.

any visitors to VILA VITA Parc throughout its 20-year history were
introduced to golf at its beginner-friendly facilities on the cliff-top
resort near Porches, and now enjoy the subtleties of this royal and ancient
game. Comprising an attractive 9-hole pitch and putt course, putting green
and driving range, these facilities are suitable for experienced golfers,
learners and those who have never previously had the opportunity to take
up this great and healthy game, suited to people of all ages.
In view of the importance golf has to the hospitality business in this region
and therefore to VILA VITA Parc, where golf is such an attraction all year
long, the resort has its own full-time teaching pro, Carlos Santos, who is

beginners to low-handicap players. Carlos administers, amongst other more
advanced tuition, introductory or 'crash' courses for complete beginners,
where he explains the use of each club, the stance, grips, basic shots, etiquette,
rules and sometimes even a brief history of the sport.
Many VILA VITA Parc guests, however, already are competent players, and
Carlos accompanies groups of guests to the local courses they have chosen
to play, making sure that everything runs smoothly right from departure
from the resort up to teeing off on the first hole. Both these more advanced

demanding championship courses along the Algarve can also hone their
skills at practice facilities available at any of the full-size 18-hole courses.
The nearest of these to VILA VITA Parc is a mere 10 to 15 minutes away,
is the Ocenico Amendoeira Golf Resort, which opened in 2008 with its two
18-hole layouts designed by famous golfers, Sir Nick Faldo and Christy
O'Connor Junior. Amendoeira's practice facilities are fully comprehensive,
and include a spacious driving range with several target greens, a green for
pitching, chipping and bunker practice, and a large putting green, enabling
the pro to teach the whole gamut of golf shots.
Another Amendoeira feature is its 9-hole par-3 Ocenico Academy course,
where beginners can try out the techniques they have learnt before
ultimately progressing to golfing on regular 18-hole layouts.
VILA VITA Parc also caters to golf professionals that wish to bring their
own groups to enhance their golf skills, particularly during the winter
season, when many golf courses in Northern and Central Europe are covered
in snow.

s we drive down the road that leads to VILA VITA Parc, it's
impossible not to notice the beautiful tall trees that peek over the
resort's walls. But whilst they look imposing from the outside, inside they
are part of a larger natural scenery that quietly embraces visitors and
blends in harmoniously with the luxury resort's buildings.
If a mature garden is known to add value to a property,VILA VITA Parc's
Alice in Wonderland-style garden takes it a step further, adding infinite
charm to the development.
The man in charge for the upkeep of such beautiful surroundings is the
very busy Luis Correia, who has been working at the resort for the past
seven years. Leading a team of 38 people working from 8am until 5pm,
Luis is responsible for assigning the different tasks to his staff, according
to their strengths and areas of expertise.
Subtropical and with a clear Mediterranean influence, the resort's
manicured gardens stretch across 22 hectares and are divided into several
areas.According to the head gardener, it takes a group of 10 people, twice a
week, to keep all the public areas impeccably clean for guests. With a clever
mix of indigenous and exotic plants, one of the garden's highlights is
undoubtedly its various palm trees, of which Luis estimates there must be
around 4 to 5,000 across the resort. Despite the recent red palm weevil
herausragende, imposante hohe Bume.

epidemic, which is still active in the Algarve and has killed hundreds of
trees throughout the region, the resort's gardening team has dealt with the
problem efficiently, keeping this distinct VILA VITA Parc trademark safe.
Whilst walking past some burgeoning pine trees on his way to the 18-hole
mini golf course, Luis comments that this is one of the guests' favourite
spots, as it features a relaxing lake, as well as a great combination of larger
vegetation, smaller palms and a wide range of colourful flowers.Traditional
Portuguese olive trees live side by side with gorgeous chamaerops, also
known as European fan palms, and blossoming flowers, such as the fragrant
common mallow. We change our flower beds according to the season, he
explains. We always try to play with colours and also with the sun and the
shade.Where there's shade, we will usually plant ivy, so we have a nice green
mantle covering the ground, and where there's sun, we plant flowers.Other
gems spread out across the resort, he adds, include the exotic Paran pine,
the leafy Japanese sago palm and the lovely purplish jacaranda.
Explaining that his team is dedicated to maintaining the original
landscaping project, designed by American landscape architect Ron
Oprzadek, Luis also reveals that they use organic treatments as much as
possible, and nurture tired plants back to health in their own greenhouse
in Porches.Once they're recovered, we bring them back to the resort.
On the flower front, the gardener highlights the exotic bird of paradise
flower, as well as the colourful gazaneas, hibiscus and pansies, which can
usually be seen in flower beds on every building's doorstep. It's a small
treat for guests, he says. Also popular, he adds, are the South American
bougainvilleas, which thrive in the sun but demand the full-time attention
of one of the team's members.
Another challenge is to keep the resort's lawns looking flawless throughout
the year, a job in which the team is succeeding beautifully and which
requires two full-time people during spring and summer just to trim the
grass. On the 9-hole pitch and putt course, complete with its own lake, the
grass is kept to perfection for golfers, whilst the huge trees get an
occasional trim so guests won't lose their stunning sea views. After all, even
paradise needs some basic maintenance and, as Luis assures, his team
does the best it can.

ith its rolling gardens, friendly service and the beach right on its

With its own tennis courts and putting green, the resort offers various
pastimes to keep kids active, with everything from tennis and golf clinics to
football, volleyball, ping-pong and mini-golf tournaments. There are also
traditional games, such as sack races, as well as nature walks where the
children can pick flower specimens and go birdwatching, either within the
resort or around its beachside restaurant Arte Natica in Armao de Pra.
Considering the number of restaurants on site that provide delicious food
for guests, as well as the excellent fresh ingredients to hand, VILA VITA
Parc is also the perfect place for youngsters to learn all about food. Divided
into various stages, the Master Chef Junior cooking course begins with the
children trying to identify ingredients and then giving suggestions of what
dishes can be made with them, before getting their hands dirty themselves
by putting together dishes such as salads, pizzas and jelly, the amusingly
named Sticky Gooey Monsters.
Following the same theme, the Cake Designers Club sees kids creating their
own biscuits and cupcakes, from making the mixture through to the
decoration, which gives them a chance to showcase their creative side.
At Annabella's Kids Park, there's also face-painting and balloon-modelling,
but the resort is also dedicated to nurturing the social responsibility of the
younger generation. Calling them Ambassadors of the Environment,
VILA VITA Parc organises fun awareness campaigns about sustainability
and recycling, for example the harmful effects of plastic on sealife,
explains Snia, an initiative that's complemented by a visit to see the marine
animals at the Zoomarine theme park, located nearby.
The children also help water and maintain the resort's organic vegetable
garden, and take part in activities such as picking vegetables and sowing
new ones.
Vielfalt an sportlichen Freizeitbeschftigungen fr Kinder.
Arte Nutica, in Armao de Pra, Vgel beobachten knnen.
Of course it is not only the children who can make the most of the resort's
5-star facilities and excellent location. The Teenager Activity Programme
available during the summer school holidays provides an array of exciting
activities for the older kids, too. It involves much more adventure and
discovering the region, as well as water sports, naturally, adds Snia. Surfing
lessons, volleyball, day trips to water parks and jeep adventure tours are just
some of the activities available to ensure that children of all ages experience
a holiday that's truly unforgettable, whilst providing parents with peace of
mind, and peace and quiet!
natrlich Wassersport, erklrt Snia. Surfstunden, Volleyball, Tagesausflge
damit Kinder aller Altersklassen unvergessliche Ferien erleben. Derweil

FINE WINES, SUPERB FOOD AND GENUINE HOSPITALITY.
HERDADE DOS GROUS PROVIDES A TASTE OF THE GOOD LIFE
V I TA
here's no feeling quite like getting away from it all, and no one knows
this better than VILA VITA Parc, whose sister resort of Herdade dos
Grous is a true haven of relaxation.
Nestled in the heart of the Alentejo just outside Beja, only an hour's drive
from the resort, the beautiful rural retreat of Herdade dos Grous is nature
at its finest, with more than 700 hectares of countryside and a central lake
framing surroundings like few others.
However, today's lifestyle means that many people find it hard to take
some time out from their everyday lives. With this in mind, VILA VITA
Parc has created a special package that's ideal for that much-needed
getaway for two, at the pace of the Alentejo. Suitably named 'Epicurean's
delight', this superb four-night package was designed tofill the soul for
a long time and restore the peace of mind we need to keep up the crazy
pace that's very much a part of this century, according to Snia Gillig,
director of rooms division at VILA VITA Parc, for whom the Herdade is
very special indeed.
Accommodation is in a double room in one of the three beautiful
proper ties that surround the lake. Rustic in style, the charm of the
24 rooms and suites goes hand in hand with modern facilities and

little luxuries. Guests are welcomed by fresh seasonal fruit on arrival, but
this in fact is just the beginning of an authentic gastronomic experience
that makes Herdade dos Grous a utopia for food and wine lovers alike.
With breakfast of homemade bread and organic farm products,
including jam, honey and teas, served every morning, as well as a light
lunch, a four-course dinner and a special four-course tasting menu at
the estate's own restaurant, the 'Epicurean's delight' package is a real
treat for the palate.
All the meat is free-range and certified, with cattle, sheep and pigs freely
roaming the fields here, whilst entirely organic produce is grown on site
to ensure that only the freshest and highest quality ingredients are used
to prepare each culinary creation.
The restaurant serves traditional but beautifully presented Alentejo
cuisine, of course, and boasts a large outdoor terrace affording stunning
views over the entire estate, not least of the 73 hectares of vineyards that
produce the Herdade's extraordinary award-winning wines.
As well as a guided tour of the estate, guests can visit the wine cellar
where these exceptional nectars are made, and taste three of the wines
with the distinctive crane label: the sommelier's selection of Herdade
dos Grous Colheita Branco (white), Colheita Tinto (red), and Reserva
Tinto (red).

Of course, this piece of Alentejo countryside not only produces the grapes
that make these wines so outstanding, but also the olives that go towards
making Herdade dos Grous' gourmet olive oil. An olive oil tasting allows
guests to sample this fresh, elegant olive oil with a hint of spice just one of
the many gourmet products launched by the estate.
It's not only about food, though: the package has also been thoughtfully
put together to show guests what makes this piece of paradise, and the
Alentejo in general, so special. With free use of bicycles to explore the
property, where the beauty of nature awaits around every corner, the
package also includes an outing on one of the beautiful resident horses, or
horse-riding basics for those with less experience.
Teas from the Herdade and cakes served daily at the Wine Bar, and a
farewell gift of the estate's own handmade cookies, complete the package.
This is Herdade dos Grous in all its glory, believes Snia. It's authentic,
unhurried and uncomplicated, respecting the land and its pace, which gives
everything a special character.

Liedern heimwehkranker portugiesischer Seefahrer, afrikanischen
nationalen Radionsendern.

Porcelain
Granted the title of Royal Factory just five years after its foundation, the
brand originally worked with glass. However, it was following extensive
development in porcelain that the Portuguese company found its true
calling as the maker of the finest porcelain in the country.
Damit
wurde der Beginn eines neuen
Abschnittes in der Geschichte
dieser Kultmarke gesetzt.

But thanks to the spirit of the founder and the preservation of the drawing
and painting school, the company was reorganised and modernised,
marking a new chapter in the history of the iconic brand.
In some way or another, the brand has always managed to keep up with the
times, never afraid of taking risks in the development of new products
and new forms of communication, says Nuno Barra, marketing and new
product development director of Atlantis (VAA).
In 2001, the Vista Alegre Group merged with the equally traditional
Portuguese fine crystal-makers Atlantis, and today, VAA is the largest
producer of tableware in Portugal and the sixth-largest producer of
porcelain and crystal in the world.
The table service of the Portuguese President, the White House and
Buckingham Palace, amongst many other statehouses, Vista Alegre is the
synonym of excellence and longevity. But how can a brand with 189 years of
history remain so appealing even today? Nuno Barra explains: On the one
hand it is its respect for its past, and on the other hand it is its ability to
innovate and reinvent new products. Additionally, it has always made a
point of working with the best designers and artists, which has enabled it to
launch extraordinary pieces that are appreciated the world over.
In fact, at this years Maison&Objet fair in Paris, VAA presented its new
collections for 2013. Already, six of the pieces have been nominated for
international design prizes.
This of course comes as no surprise to the brand, which has produced many
iconic pieces over its long history. The classic Cozinha Velha and the more
contemporary Ornament launched two years ago and designed by the
Frenchman Sam Baron are two examples of its most popular table
services, whilst its most sought-after decorative collections include Tea with
Alice, and the Almas de Lisboa and Alma do Porto lines.
The brand also has a long tradition in creating special editions, some classic
that go to the roots of the brand and antique porcelain art, such as Aves de
Portugal, the Vintage collection and commemorative pieces, others
contemporary that delve into the best of contemporary culture, with
highlights including the Project of Contemporary Artists (PAC), which
features collaborations with artists such as Joana Vasconcelos, Nadir Afonso
and Portinari, the Project of Contemporary Sculptors (PEC), and the
recently launched 1+1=1 (1 writer+ 1 artist = 1 piece). Besides these are two
projects in cooperation with the Ilustrarte Biennial Exhibition of
International Illustration, which resulted in a limited edition of unique wall
plates designed by the biennial's winners in 2003, 2007 and 2009, featuring
award-winning designs which gained new life as beautifully painted
porcelain. These latter projects have quickly become the symbol of a
contemporary Vista Alegre.
The brand's philosophy of staying faithful to its roots yet investing in
innovation and continued excellence is also well documented at the Vista
Alegre Historical Museum in Ilhavo, in the northern Portuguese district of
Aveiro, which was inaugurated in 1964 and depicts the brand's evolution
since its origins.
Having also teamed up with the French haute couture house Christian
Lacroix for a stunning four-piece Mix&Match collection,Vista Alegre is still
looking ahead, in particular with the new IDPool project in Ilhavo, which
hopes to welcome young stars of international design from Germany, UK,
Italy, Brazil and Indonesia, among many other countries, in order to
promote the exchange of ideas and experiences.
www.vistaalegreatlantis.com
Beispiele ihrer beliebtesten Tafelservices.
und Alma do Porto.

ith a unique blend of art and wine,Arte Algarve opened its doors in
the summer of 2011 with the hope of encouraging interaction and
creating a community within the art world, where people can meet and
socialise over a glass of wine. Two years down the line, and this is exactly
what they have achieved.
The setting, of course, couldn't be more unique. Located within the nica
Adega Cooperativa do Algarve winery in Lagoa, the gallery has been
cleverly incorporated into its surroundings to provide an experience for all
the senses. From the sound of the machinery to the smell of the wine being
made, through to the glass panels that allow visitors a glimpse of the winery
beneath their feet, this is an art gallery like no other.
The combination of art and wine is an ideal one because they work so well
together. And people who love wine, love art, and vice versa! laughs Rolf
Osang, the director of the gallery whose passion for art is clear. Covering
1,400sqm, the gallery features four very different rooms, with the largest
being home to sculptures, paintings and even pottery displayed in a very
unique set-up.
The biggest draw to the gallery, however, are the Arte Algarve Opens, which
run for three months at a time. Now in its 7th edition, the latest event
opened in March and welcomed more than 30 artists. According to Rolf
Osang, it promisedto dazzle in the unique ambience of Portugal's largest

Alongside some new faces, some very prominent international artists are
showcasing their work at the Arte Algarve Open VII, which runs until June
8.Amongst them are Raffaele Rossi, who exhibited at the Venice Biennale;
Karin Vlieger, a Brazilian-German painter whose passion involves colourful
paintings of exotic plants; and Portugal-based Daniel Hasselmyr, who
paints with watercolours. In addition, two special guests will be presenting
their work together in the gallerys longest room: Louis la Rooy, a worldfamous glass artist who creates stunning glass sculptures, and Harry
Klunder, who will be showing some impressive abstract photographs.
Having received more than 800 people at the previous vernissage, the
gallery director is pleased that the Arte Algarve Open VII is just as
successful:We are on target for setting new standards for fine art in the
Algarve, states Rolf. With plenty of parking, the gallery has certainly
become a staple of the community, holding various special fairs and events
throughout the year. In fact, every Thursday,Arte Algarve holds a popular
social evening, where people can come together and enjoy music, good food
and a glass of wine. Once a month, well-known local musician Beto Kalulu
livens up the evening, whilst fado singer Ondina is joined by other fado
artists, who perform very unusualFado Sessions, also once a month.
Making the most of the Algarvean summer, the gallery is also organising an
Open Air Art Fair, which takes place every Saturday from June 15 to
August 17 along the picturesque quayside of Ferragudo.
From 6pm until midnight, up to 40 painters, sculptors and artisans will be
showcasing and selling their work, with the atmosphere enhanced by many
well-known bands who perform in the town's main square during these
summer evenings. It's a unique summertime attraction in the Algarve,
believes Rolf.
The gallery is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm.

Claus Porto
IT IS ONE OF PORTUGALS MOST ICONIC AND LUXURIOUS

betrenden Duft, alles fein in einem wunderschnen Stck Seife verpackt;
Whether for its Art Deco packaging, its gorgeous scents or its century-long
history, Claus Porto has remained one of the most iconic products made
right here in Portugal under the Ach. Brito name.
Its history dates back to 1887, when Ferdinand Claus und Georges Ph.
Schweder, two Germans living in Oporto, in the north of Portugal, opened
the country's first soap factory and named it Claus & Schweder. Their
products became incredibly popular and won many awards, but with the
dawn of the First World War and Germany's involvement in the conflict, the
two founders had to flee the country, leading to the factory's closure in 1914.
It was here that it came into Portuguese hands, with the former factory
manager Achilles de Brito and his brother Afonso taking over the entire
set-up. And so it was that, in 1918,Ach. Brito & C Lda was born.
Forever labelled as an authentic Portuguese product, the Ach. Brito soap
went on to become a national sweetheart. But that wasn't enough with a
clear strategy to promote its products abroad, the company added a
lithography to the factory in the 1950s, and, to stand out even further, the
business introduced hand-painted labels to add a more personal touch to
its products.
So
wurde, 1918, Ach. Brito & C Lda geboren.

line of products exclusively under the Claus Porto name the jewel in the
company crown and thus gained a new fanbase across the globe.
With the motto Preserve the past, hearten the present, challenge the
future, the company's philosophy is still anchored in the same principles as
its founding fathers, one of exclusivity, luxury, and tradition. With a wonderful texture and irresistible French fragrances conceived exclusively for Ach.
Brito, the 100% vegetable Claus Porto soaps are partially handcrafted and
milled seven times, before being carefully wrapped by hand with a wax seal.
One of the factors that has most contributed to the company's longevity is
precisely its history, and everything that was built by our ancestors, says
Aquiles Brito, who notes that in Portugal, the best-sellers are the Deco
Collection's Bath line and the Musgo Real products,an iconic collection for
menthat dates back to the 1920s. Even new products, some to be launched
soon, stem from past creations.
In fact, the Britos have taken great care in preserving the company's
incredibly rich heritage, from soap packages and furniture to formulas and
photographs. It's perhaps one of the biggest treasures any company can
have the preservation of memories built over time, believes Aquiles.
Stating that there are very few brands with such a high quality, such
intrinsic value and such a rich heritage as Claus Porto, the founder's greatgrandson believes that the company's values, alongside the quality that
more than a century of know-how gives us, have ensured that Claus Porto
remains the icon it is today.
With the Claus Porto amenity line now exclusively available at VILA VITA
Parc, Aquiles adds:Due to the resort's exclusivity, attention to detail and
intrinsic luxury, qualities that Claus Porto can completely relate to, it could
not be a more perfect union.

untergebracht seien. Auch Lcia Moniz, die nach ihrer Rolle in dem englischen Spielfim Tatschlich...Liebe (Originaltitel Love Actually) bekannt
wurde, wohnte whrend der Dreharbeiten im Hotel.
Die weltweite Allianz Leading Hotels of the World, die in ihrer Liste lediglich

ome resorts may ensure a great experience behind closed doors, but
VILA VITA Parc is providing guests with a sneak peek of its luxury
lifestyle as soon as they step foot in Portugal. Having offered a unique
shuttle service since day one thanks to the resort's heliport and its
partnerships with helicopter charter companies , its portfolio has been
extended with the launch of the Bentley Service in October 2012.
Comprising a royal blue V8 Bentley Arnage Red Label, complete with
designated chauffeurs trained at the Bentley School of Drivers, this special
shuttle service is available on request and is suited to even the most demanding
guests. Besides providing airport transfers, the luxurious Bentley can also
be used as a courtesy car for guests staying in the resort's private villas or
as a pick-up service for the resort's 2-Michelin star Ocean restaurant.Visits
to Herdade dos Grous, the resort's Alentejo country estate, a quick shopping

can also be provided, depending on availability and the client's imagination.
As part of the service, the resort also offers a choice of three carefully put
together picnic baskets for two people, all including drinks, tasty sandwiches
and other mouth-watering light bites.
The VILA VITA Parc Bentley Service fits in beautifully in our portfolio
of excellence because it provides guests with an entirely bespoke
experience. It's a different experience right from the start, arriving at the
airport and being welcomed by a chauffeur dressed in an elegant uniform
and driving an extraordinary vehicle, said Sonia Gillig, director of rooms
division. Whilst clients seeking the Bentley Service are usually
sophisticated and used to having a private chauffeur, Sonia also added that
the helicopter shuttle service is most requested by businessmen, who,
despite being on holiday, still have to meet their professional demands,
namely business meetings. However, she stressed, VILA VITA Parc works
only as a mediator between the client and the helicopter charter company,
so any special details will have to be arranged on request.

A Vintage affair
ONE OF THE BEST-KNOWN PORTUGUESE SYMBOLS, PORT
WINE HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE AT VILA VITA PARC
ong before Portuguese table wines began slowly but steadily making
a name for themselves on the international markets, Port wine was
already one of the country's biggest exports. Shipped to the four corners of
the world since the second half of the 17th century, Port was originally
destined for the English and Flemish markets, which turned to Iberian
wines at the expense of Burgundy due to an altercation with France.Today,
it is a huge calling card for Portugal and a much-appreciated nectar
amongst wine lovers thanks to its distinct flavour.
Much of the character of this fortified and naturally sweet wine comes
from the region where the Port grapes grow, the Alto Douro wine region,
the world's third oldest but, according to many, the first ever to be regulated (1756) and demarcated (1757). Holding the title of UNESCO World
74
V I TA
Heritage Site since 2001 and spreading across 26,000 hectares of land, this
stunning landscape located about an hour's drive north of Oporto and
bathed by the Douro river has a hot and dry climate, whilst the soil is arid
and rich in schist, retaining the heat during the day and helping the vines
endure the cooler winter nights.
Despite being produced with low yield, concentrated grapes from the
Douro and, in the old days, transported with the help of traditional rabelo
boats a symbol of the region's heritage - to the wine cellars that dot the
city of Vila Nova de Gaia, it was Oporto that had the honour of naming the
beverage. The rivalry between the two cities, located on opposite banks of
the Douro, could also be compared to a similar dispute between the
Portuguese and the English about the wine's origins. Whilst some English
producers claimed that they had 'invented' Port, as British merchants
would add brandy to prevent the wine from going sour, such method was
already known in Portugal since the Age of Discoveries. However, Port wine
only became truly popular in the mid-17th century, with Croft being the
first company to export the beverage, a tradition that is carried on today
by Krohn,Taylor's and Symington, amongst other groups.
History aside, what makes Port so special is its fermentation process, which
is interrupted at an initial stage with the addition of a neutral firewater
with around 77% of alcohol.Added to all Port wines, the firewater needs to
be approved by the Port and Douro Wine Institute, thus ensuring the
product's authenticity.
A huge supporter of traditional Portuguese products, VILA VITA Parc
holds a special place for Port, as Ocean restaurant's sommelier Nelson
Marreiros explains:Port wine is a worldwide ambassador for Portugal and
all of our international clients know it. We have a special room in our wine
cellar for Ports, where we keep mainly vintage wines, which are considered
the best. But whilst clients are familiar with the Portuguese drink, many
are not aware of the huge diversity available, from the simpler ruby Port to
the higher quality Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), tawny, reserve and even
76
V I TA
In unserem
Wine Spectator erhielt.

These barnacles are truly wild and only grow in a few remote, hazardous
places. Traditionally found in Portugal, Spain, France and Morocco, they
thrive in areas that are exposed to the hard beat of the Atlantic waves so the
collectors have to clamber down steep rocks or try to jump from boats bobbing in the rough sea to reach them. Dressed in wet suits, boots and carrying hand-made tools, they head for the rocks. The harvester can easily get
pounded by a breaker and slip into the sea in pursuit of the bounty. They
used to be called marisco dos pobres, or the seafood of poor people, but the
tables have turned and the barnacles can command whopping prices of up
to 60 per kilo. On one of Virgilios harvesting trips he met a Spanish collector who told him they were selling in Spain at anything up to 150 a kilo!
The strange-looking perceve has a sooty finger-thick trunk with a rosecoloured inner tube.At one end is a scaly head that attaches itself to a rock
and at the other a diamond-shaped foot that looks like a dinosaurs claw.At
high tide, this foot opens to reveal little pink tendrils through which the barnacle filters the surrounding seawater to feed. The correct way to eat them is
to pinch the foot between your thumb and finger and pull the inner tube out
of its scaly case, and eat the flesh off from the claw.
To cook them, Virgilio explains:Traditionally, they are very lightly boiled
with just a touch of salt and a bay leaf then served piping hot on a plate with
bread and butter. They should remain fresh for about four days, although of
course like most seafood, they are best eaten on the day they are pulled from
the sea.
Don't even think about gathering your own goose barnacles from the Sagres
or Cape St Vincent rocks. Besides the danger from the sea, each perceve
patch is jealously guarded by locals and controlled by strict regulations
and licences.
Perceves taste like sweet lobster with the texture of an oyster, washed over
with a tang of sea spray, but you end up with more bits on your table at the
end of the meal than you did at the start. They are delicious, and washed
down with wine, perceves really do make a fabulous starter.

An extremely versatile dish, there are many versions of the cataplana here
in the Algarve, and at VILA VITA Parc, it is one of the specialities of
executive chef Paulo Fortes. One of the dishes that features in the resort's
cooking lessons, where guests are accompanied to Portimo market before
returning to the resort and learning how make a number of wonderful
dishes, chef Paulo Fortes' cataplana comprises monkfish, prawns, clams,
Portuguese chourio sausage and a medley of fresh, bright vegetables, all
perfectly seasoned.
We get all our seasonal vegetables from our estate in the Alentejo [Herdade
dos Grous], and everything else comes from local suppliers. That is
something that is very important to us, explains chef Paulo, who selects
the fish from his supplier at his stall in Portimo, who in turn gets the fish
straight from the docks in Sagres, in the western Algarve. The white wine is,
of course, from the same country estate near Beja, which chef Paulo Fortes
also recommends to accompany the dish.
The chef, who likes to get people involved in the laid-back cooking lessons,
believes the appeal of the cataplana lies in its unusual appearance and its
delicious contents.Visitors are very interested in what it's all about, notes
the chef. He also explains the dish can be made with alternative ingredients,
such as octopus, cod or even meat added to the clams and prawns. The
main ingredient, however, is time.
Paulo Fortes recommends using a high-quality, medium to large cataplana
dish, which can be purchased at any handicraft shop.

Fortes enthlt Seeteufel, Krabben, Muscheln, portugiesisches Chourio
