    According to Paul Gerber, during the Ancien Régime the strategic aims were the same both in land and at sea, due to limited performances of the warships. On the eve of the Seven Years War, the British Admiralty issued new and more aggressive Fighting Instructions and Admiral Byng, the loser of Minorca, was shooted pour encourager les autres. However only the after 1782, with a new generation of men-at-war, the old Ermattungsstrategie ("strategy of exhaustion or attrition") was abandoned and the aim of the naval operations became the destruction (Vernichtung) of the enemy fleet.
