Fig. 4.17b. “Giant Strides”
Chorus with Rhythmic Variations
Begin combining suspension-approach with rhythmic variation by sketching
‘out examples, as | have done here. With time, it will be as accessible as any
other technique you now have.
| began working with this technique because it introduces one of the guitar's
really beautiful textures: polyphony (remember my birthday party back in
chapter 22). Once you begin working with polyphonic textures, itis hard to
stop!
One Way To Learn All Those Darn Seeds!
Choose a seed, for example 44, and sketch out the seed on the fingerboard,
as Ihave done on the Fingerboard Template (see figure 4.18). For starters,
use a major scale (| use a C major scale in fig. 4.18). This template works as
a visual guide to help you learn the shapes. Sketch the seed, going diatoni-
cally up the scale along the strings. Continue it on all possible sets of strings,
as shown in fig. 4.18. In Foundations (chapter 6), there are blank fingerboard
templates for you to copy and use to fill in the seeds you are studying. |
made templates for all the seeds and they really help in my explorations.
Make your own templates for all the palette chart seeds from the blank
template in Foundations (chapter 6).
