Kurz vor Weihnachten vergangenen Jahres

fand die Erffnungsfeier des neuen Prada
Stores in SoHo statt. Es ist das erste von
drei groen Geschften, in dem Rem Koolhaas neue Verkaufsideen fr die Mailnder
Modefirma realisiert; weitere werden in Los
Angeles und San Francisco entstehen.
Nach einiger Verzgerung und enormen
Kosten ist das Prestigeobjekt kein Laden
im herkmmlichen Sinn, sondern Erlebnisraum, Shopping-Experiment, privater und
ffentlicher Raum zugleich nun vollendet.
Nachts verwandelt sich der kommerzielle
Kleiderladen zu einer Sttte fr Kultur, zu
einem Auditorium, in dem 200 Menschen

This shop in SoHo, the first of three in the US

in which Rem Koolhaas is realizing new sales
concepts for the Milan fashion company
Prada, is designed as an experimental shopping environment and a space for various
events. Accommodating up to 200 persons,
it can be transformed at night into a venue for
the arts, with facilities for film showings, various performances and lectures. The stage for
these events is formed by a large wave-like
flight of stairs that sweeps down from the entrance level. During the day, the steps are
used to display shoes and handbags. At
night, they serve as seating. On the opposite
side, the wave sweeps up again in the form of
a smooth, curving ramp, from which a plat-

Bhne fr all diese kulturellen Aktivitten ist
eine riesige Welle aus Holz, die sich von der
Eingangsebene nach unten schwingt und
als Sitztreppe dient. Tagsber werden auf
den Stufen Schuhe oder Handtaschen ausgestellt. Auf der gegenber liegenden Seite
schwappt die Welle als glatte Holzflche
wieder nach oben. Aus dieser Flche kann
eine Plattform ausgeklappt werden. ber
eine schmale Treppe an der Seite erreicht
der Besucher weitere Verkaufsflchen im
rckwrtigen Teil des Geschfts. Kleider
und Accessoires sind in unterschiedlich
groen Kfigen aus Streckmetall ausgestellt
und hngen frei im Raum. Sie laufen, digital
gesteuert, in Schienen an der Decke und
knnen immer wieder neu positioniert werden. Findet eine Veranstaltung statt, werden
die Kfige eingesammelt. Der untere Wendepunkt der Welle erschliet zustzliche
Verkaufsrume, eine Kosmetikabteilung
sowie die Umkleiden im Untergeschoss.
Dort offenbaren sich weitere technische Raffinessen: Auf Knopfdruck verwandeln sich
die transparenten Umkleidewnde in opake
Flchen. In einem Zauberspiegel kann
sich der Kunde, dank digitaler Visualisierung, von allen Seiten und in slow motion
im Playback sehen. Lichtsimulationen fhren
vor, dass das Kleid in der Dmmerung genauso gut aussieht wie bei Sonnenschein.

at the side leads to sales areas at the rear,
where clothing and accessories are suspended in space in mesh cages. These digitally controlled elements run along tracks in
the ceiling and can be drawn aside when special events are held. In the basement, there
are further sales areas, a cosmetics department and changing cubicles. At the press of a
button, the transparent walls of the cubicles
can be transformed into opaque surfaces. By
a process of digital visualization, a magic mirror allows customers to see themselves from
all sides in slow motion in playback. Simulated
lighting conditions also enable one to judge
how clothing will look in sunlight and at night.
