To Note

There is no preposition directly before a year in German.

Example:
Die Berliner Mauer fiel 1989./Die Berliner Mauer fiel im Jahr 1989.
(not: Die Berliner Mauer fiel in 1989.)

However, you often encounter a preposition before the year when you’re listening to
or reading German. This is an anglicism and is officially considered incorrect in
German (at least for now).
