The texts printed here may deviate slightly from the texts heard in the
recordings. This is due to the fact that at the time of Helmuth Rillings
complete recording many Bach cantatas had not yet been published in
the Neue Bachausgabe, so that material from the old Bach-Gesamtausgabe had to be used. The texts printed here, and those found in Alfred Drrs Die Kantaten von Johann Sebastian Bach (latest edition:
Kassel 1995) are from the Neue Bachausgabe.

Denkt man
zusammenfassenden Weise verstehen knnen.

accompaniment, and the tenor aria no. 4 features a violoncello piccolo invented by Bach himself as a solo
instrument. With this five-string instrument, which had
debuted ten weeks before in a cantata (BWV 180 Schmcke
dich, o liebe Seele), Bach was able to give a middle voice
instrument a very large tonal range and thus boost its
melodic flexibility. The text speaks of edlem Frieden (noble
concord) with a long note in the vocals and of salvation
on earth and predestination in heaven. Recitative no. 3
already spanned another great distance in the form of an octave on the words A und O, Anfang und Ende (The A and
O, beginning and ending). Before the final chorale, Bach
confirms the New Years resolution of crushing Satan under
our feet, through the choir accompaniment of the bass
soloist this is another highly unusual device.
