Checklist: spelling
√
1 Notify your calling partner before you start spelling.
2 Try to avoid the use of phrases like ‘for’ or ‘as in’.
3 It is not necessary for the other person to repeat each letter.
4 Many countries use a regional telephone alphabet.
5 Double letters are repeated in the US, but in the UK preceded by: ‘double’.
6 The German ‘e’ sounds like the English ‘a’.
7 In the US the ‘z’ is pronounced like [zii] and in the UK like [zed].
Useful phrases:
I’m afraid I didn’t catch the last name. Would you mind spelling it for me?
Would you like me to spell the company name?
Can you spell that using a telephone key, please?
Is that ‘I’ as in Italy, or ‘E’ as in Edison?
Did I hear you correctly: MYER, not with EY, just with Y?
