Paul Klee is considered a learned artist, as a pictor doctus - scientist and painter in one
person. He was an artist of European modernity and participated in nearly all "isms". By
Walter Gropius, Paul Klee was appointed to the state Bauhaus in Weimar in 1920 as a
master of the workshop.
Senecio originated there in the course of his many-sided activity in 1922. The geometrical
forms are conspicuous in this picture. On the one hand, this applies to the image carrier,
that is to say the carton, and on the other hand to the human form, which is hardly
distinguishable from the beige background. The forms are abstracted, but not so that the
objectivity of the face would be recognizable. Here, Klee makes a remarkable contribution
to painting. It breaks the boundaries of the material, loosens the hard edges of cubism by
means of "soft lines" and frees the color from the splendor and pathos of "hard" futurism.
Paul Klee had to leave Weimar after the political upheaval in 1926 and moved with the
Bauhaus to Dessau. After his art was defamed as degenerate as from 1933, he emigrated
to his Swiss homeland, where the great artist died in 1940.
