A1 LEKTION 7 : Getting to know someone

Hello everyone and welcome to our video series on learn German for beginners.
In the last lesson you learned how to introduce yourself in German, and in this lesson you
will learn, how to get to know someone by asking questions in German.

We will learn how to ask questions in a formal and in an informal way. What are these two
forms?
Sie is the formal form and Du is the informal form. You might have come across these in the
previous lesson.

SIE Form is generally used when you are talking to strangers or in official situations.
Whereas the DU Form is used amongst friends, family and acquaintances. So let’s start by
using these forms in questions.

Wie heißen Sie? noch einmal: Wie heißen Sie?

This question is formal, where as the informal question would be:

Wie heißt du? noch einmal: Wie heißt du?

Both these questions are the same, only used in different contexts. The answer to these
questions would be:
Ich heiße Monika. noch einmal: Ich heiße Monika.

The next question is:

Wie ist Ihr Familienname? noch einmal: Wie ist Ihr Familienname?

And the informal question is:

Wie ist dein Familienname? noch einmal: Wie ist dein Familienname?

Don't spend too many thoughts on the sentence structure, we'll be doing that in the next
lessons, just remember these questions as they are.
The answer to this question is:
Mein Familienname ist Schmidt. noch einmal: Mein Familienname ist Schmidt.

Woher kommen Sie? noch einmal: Woher kommen Sie?

informally the question is: ​Woher kommst du? noch einmal: Woher kommst du?

Ich komme aus Deutschland. noch einmal: Ich komme aus Deutschland.
You can replace ​Deutschland​ with your country.

Wo wohnen Sie? noch einmal: Wo wohnen Sie?

and informally you would ask:​ Wo wohnst du? noch einmal: Wo wohnst du?

The answer to this question: Ich wohne in Berlin. noch einmal: Ich wohne in Berlin.
You can replace Berlin with your own city.

Let’s move on to the next one:

Wie alt sind Sie? noch einmal: Wie alt sind Sie?
Informally this question will be: ​Wie alt bist du? noch einmal: Wie alt bist du?

We have already learned how to answer this question. You can go through lesson 4 once
again if you want to learn:

Ich bin dreiundzwanzig Jahre alt. noch einmal: Ich bin dreiundzwanzig Jahre alt.

Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie? noch einmal: Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie?
informal​: Welche Sprachen sprichst du? noch einmal: Welche Sprachen sprichst du?

Ich spreche Deutsch und Englisch. noch einmal: Ich spreche Deutsch und Englisch.
You can replace Deutsch und Englisch with the languages you speak. You can watch our

Let’s look at the next question:

Was machen Sie beruflich? noch einmal: Was machen Sie beruflich?
Informell: ​Was machst du beruflich? noch einmal: Was machst du beruflich?

The answer to this one could be: ​Ich bin Lehrerin. noch einmal: Ich bin Lehrerin.

Was sind Ihre Hobbys? noch einmal: Was sind Ihre Hobbys?
and informally: Was sind deine Hobbys? noch einmal: Was sind deine Hobbys?

Meine Hobbys sind fernsehen und Musik hören. noch einmal: Meine Hobbys sind fernsehen
und Musik hören.

Here also you can replace with your own hobbies. You can learn hobbies in german in our

Sind Sie verheiratet? noch einmal: Sind Sie verheiratet?

Bist du verheiratet? noch einmal: Bist du verheiratet?

Ja, ich bin verheiratet. / Nein, ich bin nicht verheiratet.

noch einmal: Ja, ich bin verheiratet. / Nein, ich bin nicht verheiratet.

Haben Sie Kinder? noch einmal: Haben Sie Kinder?

and informally you would ask: ​Hast du Kinder? noch einmal: Hast du Kinder?

Here you should answer according to the number of children you have.
Ja, ich habe zwei Kinder / Nein, ich habe keine Kinder.
noch einmal: Ja, ich habe zwei Kinder / Nein, ich habe keine Kinder.

Let’s summarize. Here are the formal questions:

Wie heißen Sie?
Wie ist Ihr Familienname?
Woher kommen Sie?
Wo wohnen Sie?
Wie alt sind Sie?
Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie?
Was machen Sie beruflich?
Was sind Ihre Hobbys?
Sind Sie verheiratet?
Haben Sie Kinder?

and here are the informal questions:

Wie heißt du?
Wie ist dein Familienname?
Woher kommst du?
Wo wohnst du?
Wie alt bist du?
Welche Sprachen sprichst du?

Was sind deine Hobbys?
Bist du verheiratet?
Hast du Kinder?
