This eighth volume of the Beiträge zur Islamischen Kunst und Archäologie assembles con-
tributions that grew from the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Colloquia of the Ernst Herzfeld-Ge-
sellschaft: in Vienna, Austria in 2017, and in Strasbourg, France in 2018. They are published
in the first and the second half of the present volume.
The Vienna colloquium, organized by Markus Ritter, Department of Art History, Uni-
versity of Vienna, discussed the theme of “Re-Assessing Nineteenth-Century Art in Islamic
Countries.” The Strasbourg colloquium was organized by Nourane Ben Azzouna, Institute
of Art History, Faculty of Historical Sciences, University of Strasbourg, and addressed “The
History of Material Cultures and Visual Arts in Islamic Lands: Current State of Research and
New Perspectives.” The full programs of the two colloquia, and of others organized on behalf
of the Ernst Herzfeld Society, are available on the Society’s website.1 An alphabetical list of
the speakers and papers presented in the two colloquia is found at the end of this volume.
The organizers wish to thank the institutions and people who supported and helped to
stage the colloquia: in Vienna, the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, the Depart-
ments of Art History and of Musicology, the Zacherlfabrik and Peter Zacherl, Mattia Guidetti,
Maximilian Hartmuth, and Safa Mahmoudian; in Strasbourg, the UR ARCHE (Unité de re-
cherche “Arts, civilisation et histoire de l’Europe”), and the MISHA (Maison Interuniversi-
taire des Sciences de l’Homme – Alsace).
For their support in editing articles gathered in this volume we express our foremost grati-
tude to the peer reviewers who commented them. Additional thanks go to Patrick Strasser,
and for the Vienna part, to Maximilian Hartmuth and Sarah Teetor.
In the year of the Vienna colloquium, sadly, two of the early and eldest members of the
Ernst Herzfeld Society passed away. Eva (Chawa) Baer (Berlin 1920–Jerusalem 2017) has
been remembered in the obituary of a Society member in another publication,2 while Doro-
thea Duda (Breslaw 1937–Vienna 2017) is commemorated at the beginning of this volume.
