NSL: Netzwerk Stadt und Landschaft Das Netzwerk Stadt und Landschaft verfolgt das Ziel, in Forschung und Lehre Grundlagen fr eine menschengerechte und nachhaltige sowie sthetisch und kulturell anspruchsvolle Gestaltung unserer Umwelt zu entwickeln und diese fr die ffentlichkeit verfgbar zu machen. Gegenstand seiner Arbeit sind Stadt und Landschaft sowie die Gleichzeitigkeit ihrer Phnomene. Dabei geht es sowohl um Fragen der Wahrnehmung und Funktion, der Zielsetzungen als auch der Gestaltung und Entwicklungssteuerung. Dies betrifft auf der einen Seite die objektive Erhebung von umweltrelevanten Daten, ihre Verknpfung und ihre bersetzung in Handlungsstrategien und auf der anderen Seite die subjektive Umsetzung dieser Strategien hinsichtlich kultureller und sthetischer Qualitten in einer klar definierten physischen Form. Um einen berblick ber Aspekte der Stadt- und Landschaftsgestaltung zu geben, umfasst das Netzwerk Stadt und Landschaft Architektur-, Ingenieur- und Sozialwissenschaften. Es ist in fnf Institute gegliedert, die jeweils den Departementen Architektur oder Bau, Umwelt und Geomatik zugeordnet sind. An den Instituten werden sowohl Problemstellungen spezifischer Orte als auch bergreifende Fragestellungen in interdisziplinrer Zusammenarbeit mit Blick auf das Ganze im Netzwerk bearbeitet.

NSL: The Network City and Landscape Through research and teaching, the Network City and Landscape (NSL) aims to lay the foundations for a design of our environment that meets human needs, is sustainable, and has high aesthetic and cultural qualities, while finding a means to make this design available to the public. The subjects of study are the city and the landscape, and the phenomena occurring simultaneously in both. It comprises questions of perception and function, objectives, design and developmental guidance. On one hand, this involves the objective collection of data relating to the environment, connecting them and translating them into strategies for action, and on the other, to present the subjective application of these strategies with respect to cultural and aesthetic qualities in a clearly defined physical form. In order to provide a comprehensive survey of the aspects of urban and landscape design, the Network City and Landscape includes architecture, engineering and the social sciences. It is subdivided into five institutes, each belonging to either the Department of Architecture or the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering. The institutes work on problems relating to specific sites, as well as broader questions, through interdisciplinary collaboration relating back to the network as a whole. www.nsl.ethz.ch

Institute of Landscape Architecture (ILA) Prof. Christophe Girot (Director) Prof. Gnther Vogt The Institute of Landscape Architecture (ILA) inte grates disciplinary research and teaching in the curriculum of the Department of Architecture. Research and teaching follow three topics: landscape design, digital media, as well as theory and history. Besides teaching at the bachelors, masters and doctorate levels, it also provides an important knowledge transfer to the public sector. At the bachelor/ masters level, the ILA offers a theory and history of landscape architecture, two design studios, integrated discipline seminars, as well as elective courses, theses, and seminar weeks. It directs the Landscape Visualization and Modeling Lab (LVML) founded in 2010 with support of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). This has enabled the ILA to advance new 3D-GIS techniques in landscape simulation. The Institute offers a one-year postgraduate programme in landscape architecture. Prof. Christophe Girot Christophe Girot ist seit 2001 ordentlicher Professor fr Landschaftsarchitektur der ETH Zrich. 2005 grndete er das Institut fr Landschaftsarchitektur (ILA). Die Mitarbeitenden des ILA entwickeln Strategien fr eine sthetisch qualittvolle und nachhaltige Gestaltung der stdtischen und lndlichen Umwelt und fr die Bewahrung historisch gewachsener Kultur- und Stadtlandschaften. Christophe Girot ist praktizierender Landschaftsarchitekt und Inhaber des Ateliers Girot.

Christophe Girot has been Full Professor of Landscape Architecture at ETH Zurich since 2001. He founded the Institute for Landscape Architecture (ILA) in 2005. In their research and teaching, the members of the ILA develop sustainable design strategies for urban and rural environments that set high standards of performance and aesthetics, while also preserving historically significant cultural and urban landscapes. Christophe Girot is a practising landscape architect and founder of Atelier Girot. In its organisational structure, the teaching and research of the Chair is oriented towards theory, design, and media. In regard to theory and history, research examines Swiss landscape architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries, moreover, a focus is placed on current theory formation themes. The design component studies the development of methods for the design of large-scale landscapes and the various demands for waterside landscapes arising from climate change. Additionally, demands arising from accelerated environmental change are integrated and provide the basis for new design strategies in dealing with landscapes. Media research is concerned with the contemporary representation of urban landscapes. With photography and video, accurate methods of perception for the analysis and representation of public space have been developed.

Die Lehre und Forschung der Professur wird in den drei Bereichen Theorie-Geschichte, EntwurfVisu ali sierung und Neue Medien organisiert. Im Bereich Theorie und Geschichte setzen sich die Forschungsarbeiten mit der Schweizer Landschaftsarchitektur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts auseinander; ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf Themen aktueller Theoriebildung. Der Entwurf befasst sich mit der Entwicklung von Methoden fr das Entwerfen grossrumiger Landschaften. Das Gestalten mit der Dynamik von Wasser in Reaktion auf die Herausforderungen des Klimawandels und die Suche nach gestalterischen Formen, die auf den beschleunigten Wandel unserer Umwelt reagieren, sind die zentralen Themen. Der Bereich Medien beschftigt sich mit der zeitgenssischen Reprsentation urbaner Landschaft. Mit Fotografie und Video werden neue, der Analyse und Darstellung des ffentlichen Raums adquate Wahrnehmungsmethoden entwickelt.

Das primre Interesse der Professur Vogt gilt den Urbanisierungsprozessen und der Qualitt des ffentlichen Raums. Sie versteht Landschaftsarchitektur als Teil der Stadt in ihren Wechselbeziehungen zu Topografie, Architektur und Infrastruktur. Bis heute ist die Vorstellung von Landschaft von einem arkadischen Ideal geprgt. Doch nur wenn Landschaft als das vielschichtige Ergebnis natrlicher, kultureller und gesellschaftlicher Prozesse aufgefasst wird, kann sie zu einer spezifischen, atmosphrischen und lebendigen Stadtlandschaft weiterentwickelt werden. In der Lehre vermittelt die Professur Vogt Kenntnisse landschaftsarchitektonischer Elemente und Typen. Besonders interessiert sie sich zudem fr die konzeptuellen und sinnlichen Aspekte des Entwurfsprozesses. In Process Cartography werden die einzelnen Schritte des Entwurfs reflektiert, whrend im disziplinbergreifenden Projekt Diskurs der Werkzeuge analoge und digitale Entwurfsinstrumente und Darstellungsmedien errtert und verglichen werden. In ihren Forschungsvorhaben befasst sich die Professur ausserdem mit neuen urbanen Qualitten im Metropolitanraum Zrich, dem ffentlichen Raum in den Alpen sowie der Strasse als dem alltglichsten, doch am wenigsten beachteten stdtischen Freiraum. Gnther Vogt has been Professor of Landscape Architecture in the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich since 2005. In 2000, he opened his Vogt Zurich office, in 2010 Vogt London and Berlin, and in 2011 Case Studio Zurich. The primary interest of the Chair is urbanisation processes and the quality of public spaces. For the Chair, landscape architecture is seen as a part of the city in a changing relationship to topography, architecture and infrastructure. Up until now, the image of landscape has been dominated by an Arcadian ideal. However, only when landscape is perceived as the many-layered result of natural, cultural and social processes can it be further developed into a specific, atmospheric and living urban landscape. In teaching, the Chair imparts knowledge of landscape architectonic elements and types. It is also especially interested in the conceptual and sensual aspects of the design process. In Process Cartography, the individual steps of the design are deliberated, while the interdisciplinary project, Discourse on Tools, discusses and compares analogue and digital design instruments and presentation media. The Chairs research plans include studying new urban qualities in the metropolitan spaces of Zurich, in the public spaces in the Alps, and in the street as the everyday and least considered urban free space.

Prof. Dr. Marc Anglil Marc M. Anglil ist seit 1997 ordentlicher Professor fr Architektur und Entwurf am Architekturdepartement der ETH Zrich. Er studierte Architektur an der ETH Zrich, wo er auch seine Doktorarbeit verfasste, welche mit der Silbermedaille der ETH ausgezeichnet wurde. Er unterrichtete an der Harvard Uni versity und an der University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Marc Anglil has been Professor of Architecture and Design at the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich since 1997. He received his degree in architecture from ETH Zurich, where he also completed his doctoral dissertation, for which he was awarded the Silver Medal of ETH Zurich. He taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and subsequently at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. His current research at the Institute of Urban Design of the Network City and Landscape (NSL) addresses developments at the periphery of large metropolitan regions. Emphasis is placed on strategies to support sustainable urban processes with attention given to the forces involved in the formation of cities. He is the author of several books, including Deviations, a manual on teaching methods, Indizien, on the political economy of contemporary urban territories, Cities of Change Addis Ababa, on urban transformation in poverty-stricken regions, and Building Brazil! on the proactive urban renewal of informal settlements. Prof. Alfredo Brillembourg, Prof. Hubert Klumpner Brillembourg & Klumpner wurden im Mai 2010 als orden tliche Professoren fr Architektur und Stdtebau an die Eidgenssische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zrich berufen. Seit ber einem Jahrzent schaffen sie Architektur fr einen Urbanen Planeten, der den Milliarden Armen in seinen stetig wachsenden Megastdten und neu entstehenden Nebenmetropolen bessere Lebensbedingungen und Sozialverhltnisse bieten kann. Alfredo Brillembourg: geboren 1961 in New York; Architekturstudium an der Columbia University in New York und Abschluss als Master of Science 1986; diploms an 1992 Erwerb eines zweiten Architektur der Universidad Central de Venezuela und Beginn der unabhngigen Berufspraxis. Hubert Klumpner: geboren 1965 in Salzburg; tek tur studium an der Universitt fr AngeArchi wandte Kunst in Wien und Abschluss der Meisterklasse 1993; Fulbright-Stipendium fr ein Zusatzstudium an der Columbia University in New York und Abschluss als Master of Science in Architektur und Stdtebau 1997. Ab 2007 waren sie Gastprofessoren an der Columbia University, wo sie gemeinsam an der GSAPP (Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation) unterrichteten und das S.L.U.M. Lab (Sustainable Living Urban Model Laboratory) grndeten. Neben ihrer akademischen Ttigkeit wirken sie als Grnder und Leiter auch im Urban-Think Tank (U-TT), einem interdisziplinren Designstudio mit Bros in Caracas, Sao Paulo, New York und, seit 2011, auch in Since May 2010, Brillembourg and Klumpner are Full Professors for Architecture and Urban Design at ETH in Zurich. For more than a decade they have been producing architecture that aims at improving living and social conditions for the ever-growing billions of poor that inhabit the worlds megacities and emergent secondary cities on our urban planet. Alfredo Brillem bourg: born in New York in 1961. Graduated in 1986 with Master of Science in Architectural Design from Columbia University. In 1992, he received a second degree from the Central University of Venezuela, and started his independent practice. Hubert Klumpner: born in Salzburg in 1965. Graduated in 1993 from the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 2005, with a Fulbright grant, he earned a Masters of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University in New York. They have worked together since 2007 at the GSAPP of Columbia University in New York where they Founded the S. L.U. M. Lab (Sustainable Living Urban Model Laboratory). Apart from their academic work, they are founders and directors of the Urban Think Tank, an interdisciplinary design practice in Caracas, Sao Paulo, and New York and since 2011 in Zurich. Zrich. Dort moderieren sie die Forschung, animieren die Entwicklung alternativer Stdtebauprogramme, erstellen Typologien und lassen sie in gebaute Prototypen bersetzen. Prof. Kees Christiaanse Kees Christiaanse ist seit 1. September 2003 ordentlicher Professor fr Architektur und Stdtebau am Institut fr Stdetbau der ETH Zrich. Er leitet die Forschungsgruppe mit dem Schwerpunkt Zeitgenssische Entwurfsstrategien. Der Schwerpunkt der Professur Christiaanse liegt in der Beobachtung urbaner Phnomene und in der Entwicklung im Entwurf einsetzbarer Methoden und Werkzeuge. Ziel ist die Erarbeitung nach hal tiger Strategien fr die Stdtebaupraxis, welche die vernderten gesellschaftlichen Tendenzen kreativ in dynamische Planungs- und Steuerungsprozesse integrieren sollen. Zu diesem Zweck werden aktuelle Themen wie der Wandel der Kulturlandschaft, die Aktivierung urbaner Brachen oder die Verdichtung stdtischer Knotenfelder beleuchtet. Vertiefend zu diesen Untersuchungen sollen Studien zu Diversifikation, Spezialisierung und der Topologie von Netzen einen Einblick in die Struktur urbaner Systeme geben. Die aus einer Synergie von Forschung und Entwurf gewonnen Erkenntnisse sollen helfen, komplexe Entwicklungen im urbanen Raum zukunftsweisend initiieren und steuern zu knnen. Kees Christiaanse ist 1953 in Amsterdam geboren. 1988 erhielt er sein Architekturdiplom an der TU Delft. Kees Christiaanse has been Full Professor for Architecture and Urban Development at ETH Zurich, Institute for Urban Development since September 2003, where he leads a research group that concentrates on contemporary design strategies. Professor Christiaanses focus is the observation of urban phenomenon and developments in the design of implementable methods and tools. The main goal is to work out sustainable strategies for urban development practice that creatively integrate the social tendencies of change into dynamic planning and steering processes. To this end, current themes are illuminated, such as changes in the cultural landscape, activation of urban brownfields, and densification of urban node fields. The depth of these investigations should be augmented with studies on diversification, specialisation and the topology of networks that offer insights into the structure of urban systems. The knowledge gained from a synergy of research and design should help initiate and direct complex future-oriented developments in urban space. Kees Christiaanse was born in 1953 in Amsterdam. Prof. Dr. Christian Schmid Christian Schmid ist seit 1999 Forscher am ETH Studio Basel und seit 2001 Dozent fr Soziologie am Departement Architektur der ETH Zrich. Seit 2009 ist er Titularprofessor fr Soziologie an der ETH Zrich. Der Bereich Soziologie befasst sich mit der Erarbeitung und Bereitstellung von analytischen und empirischen Grundlagen zum Zusammenhang von Bauen und gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung. Die Lehre soll den Studierenden die Fhigkeit vermitteln, Architektur und Stdtebau in ihrem gesellschaftlichen Kontext zu begreifen und einen Einstieg in sozialwissenschaftliche Methoden ermglichen. In der Forschung liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der trans dis zipli nren Erforschung von Urbanisierungsprozessen in vergleichender Perspektive. Gegenwrtig laufen Untersuchungen zur Metropolitanregion Zrich und zu Havanna. Ein vergleichendes Projekt im Rahmen des Future Cities Laboratory in Singapur untersucht Urbanisierungsprozesse in Tokyo, Singapur, Pearl River Delta, Kolkata, Lagos, Istanbul, Paris, Mexiko City und Los Angeles. Christian Schmid wurde 1958 geboren und studierte Geographie und Soziologie an der Universitt Zrich. Er ist Autor, Co-Autor und Mitherausgeber zahlreicher Publikationen zur Stadtentwicklung Zrichs, zur internationalen vergleichenden Analyse der Urbanisierung sowie zu Theorien der Stadt und des Raumes. 1991 war er Grndungsmitglied Christian Schmid has been a researcher at ETH Studio Basel since 1999 and a lecturer in sociology at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich since 2001. In 2009, he was named a Titular Professor in Sociology at ETH Zurich. The sociology unit is concerned with the development and dissemination of analytical and empirical fundamentals on the relationship between the built environment and social development. The teaching aims at imparting the ability to understand architecture and urban design in their social context and at presenting an introduction to the methods of social sciences. In research, the focus lies on the transdisciplinary exploration of urbanisation processes in a comparative perspective. Current projects are on the metropolitan region of Zurich and on Havana. As part of the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, a comparative project is examining contemporary urbanisation processes in Tokyo, Singapore, the Pearl River Delta, Kolkata, Lagos, Istanbul, Paris, Mexico City and Los Angeles. Die Forschungsaktivitten des Studios zielen darauf ab, Spuren urbaner Ver nde rung im materiellen, physisch wahrnehmbaren Raum aufzudecken und nach zu zeichnen. Studio Basel setzt sich mit Regionen auseinander, die in einer ambivalenten Entwicklung stehen, die von der Globalisierung geprgt sind, diesen Prozess aktiv mitformen oder durch dessen Auswirkungen nachteilig beeinflusst werden. The research approaches land issues of contemporary urban conditions by rigorously describing the modalities of physical transformation in different environments and contexts. Studio Basel investigates regions that are often ambiguous in their develop ment, embedded in the continually evolving globalisation process, partially shaping it, or affected by its adverse repercussions. These studies are based on the assumption that contemporary cities do not develop towards a common vanishing point, rather consolidate, transform or adapt their specific traits. Damit erschafft das Institut przise Anhaltspunkte, die eine vielschichtige Auseinandersetzung mit dem zeitgenssischen urbanen Raum bieten und dessen soziale, politische und wirtschaftliche Dimensionen offenbaren. Herausgekommen ist ein urbanes Portrait des Landes, das verschiedene Formen und Tendenzen der Urbanisierung beschreibt, die deren Transformation charakterisieren. The Institute commenced with an investigation on the emerging effects of globalisation on Switzerland resulting in an urban portrait of the country that involved descriptions of large-scale urban forms and trends characterising its transformation. Prof. Roger Diener Der Basler Architekt Roger Diener schloss sein Studium an der Eidgenssischen Technischen Hochschule in Zrich (ETH Zrich) 1976 mit dem Diplom ab und stieg anschliessend beim Architekturbro Marcus Diener ein, das sein Vater 1942 in Basel gegrndet hatte. 1980 wurde er Partner; seitdem ist er als Entwurfsleiter aller Projekte in der Firma ttig. 1987 bis 1989 unterrichtete Roger Diener als Professor an der cole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL), und bis heute wirkt er als solcher am Institut Stadt der Gegenwart im Studio Basel der Eidgenssischen Technischen Hochschule. Eine bedeutende Rolle spielt Roger Diener auch als Jury-Mitglied zahlreicher Architekturwettbewerbe; zudem gehrt er seit 2005 dem Landesdenkmalrat Berlin an. Viele Bauten von Diener & Diener haben internationale Preise gewonnen. So wurde jngst ihr Wiederaufbau des Ostflgels am Berliner Museum fr Naturkunde und die Einrichtung der dazugehrigen Schausammlung mit dem DAM-Preis 2011 geehrt und als neuer Klassiker fr den Umgang mit dem Bestand gelobt. Roger Diener selbst erhielt 2002 die Grande Mdaille dOr der Acadmie dArchitecture de Paris, 2009 den Prix Meret Oppen heim (CH) und 2011 die Heinrich-TessenowMedaille (D) fr sein Lebenswerk. Roger Diener, a Basel architect, graduated in 1976 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) and joined the firm of Marcus Diener Architect, the company his father had established in Basel in 1942. He was made partner in 1980 and ever since has been Head of Design of all projects of the firm. From 19871989, Roger Diener was Professor at the cole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL) and to this day is Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Studio Basel, Contemporary City Institute. Roger Dieners firm also includes his role as a jury member in many architectural competitions. Moreover, since 2005 he has been a member of the National Monuments Council (Landesdenkmalrat) of Berlin. Many buildings by Roger Diener and his firm of Diener & Diener have received international prizes: The 2011 DAM Prize for the best building in Germany for the reconstruction of the East Wing of the Museum of Natural History in Berlin in recognition of this sensitive reconstruction and the innovative permanent exhibition it houses, which is open to the public. In 2002, the Acadmie dArchitecture in Paris honoured his oeuvre with the Grande Mdaille dOr. He was awarded the Swiss Prix Meret Oppenheim in 2009, and in 2011 received the German Heinrich Tessenow medal for his lifes work.

Prof. Marcel Meili Marcel Meili, geboren 1953 in Zrich, studierte Archi tektur an der ETH Zrich (19731980) und war wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut fr Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur. Er arbeitete im Bro von Prof. Dolf Schnebli (19831985) und war Assistent am Lehrstuhl von Prof. Mario Campi (19851987). 1987 grndete er zusammen mit Markus Peter das Bro Meili, Peter Architekten in Zrich. Zu den wichtigsten Bauten zhlen das Kino RiffRaff in Zrich (2002), die Erweiterung des Hauptbahnhofs Zrich (1997), das Center for Global Dialogue der Swiss Re in Rschlikon (2000), das Hotel Park Hyatt in Zrich (2002) und der Hauptsitz der Ver siche rung Helvetia Patria in Mailand (2009). Zu den aktuellen Projekten gehren das Klanghaus im Toggen burg, das Sprengel Museum in Hannover, das Areal City West in Zrich und der Komplex Mitten-in-Mnchen in der Mnchner Altstadt. Marcel Meili war zweimal Gastdozent an der Harvard Graduate School of Design und unterrichtet seit 1999 als ordentlicher Professor fr Architektur an der ETH. Das Forschungsprojekt Bodensee Sd schlgt eine neue, wenig dichte und dezentrale Siedlungsform vor, die den traditionellen Antagonismus von Bauund Nicht-Bauland auflsen soll. Die Studie erscheint im Frhjahr 2012. The Bodensee South project proposes a new, low density and detached type of settlement that attempts to dissolve the traditional antagonism between built and un-built land. The study will be published in spring 2012.

Flchtlingslager werden als rumliche Materialisierung des Ausnahmezustandes beschrieben. Refugee camps have been described as the spatial materialization of the state of emergency. This project studies their urban and architectural dimensions by investigating the refugee camps in the Western Sahara.

These three statements reflect the basic relationships of humankind to land: social, economic and environmental. They also describe the urgency of planning problems, as the demand for services provided by land is dramatically increasing. The goal of the Institute for Spatial Planning and Landscape Development is to understand the growing complexity of the interactions between these three organising principles and to develop new approaches that balance them in order to insure the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This requires (1)the knowledge of adequate planning methods, processes, and instruments and the proficient implementation thereof, (2)the development of regional action-oriented development, adaptation and mitigation strategies, and (3)an increased link between spatial planning science and meaningful collaborative engagement with social actors to help our society make the best possible choices and ensure an economically prosperous and environmentally sustainable future.

Prof. Dr. Adrienne Grt-Regamey Professur fr Planung von Landschaft und Urbanen Systemen (PLUS) Das Ziel der Landschafts- und Umweltplanung ist es, den Verbrauch und das Vorkommen natrlicher Ressourcen so gegeneinander abzuwgen, dass knftige Generationen ihre Ansprche befriedigen knnen. Zur Zeit beschftigt sich die Landschaftsplanung jedoch vor allem mit der Landnutzung und kmmert sich kaum um die Frage der Verfgbarkeit der ntigen Ressourcen ber Raum und Zeit. Natrliche Ressourcen erbringen zahlreiche kologische, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Dienste, die fr das menschliche Wohlergehen lebenswichtig sind; so reinigen sie etwa die Luft, klren Abwasser, regulieren das Mikroklima, speichern Nhrstoffe, bieten Lebensraum fr Fauna und Flora, schenken Erholung oder vermitteln Identitt, um nur einige zu nennen. Wenn wir Landschaften und ihre Leistungen also im Hinblick auf eine nachhaltige Entwicklung betrachten, dann drfen wir Vernderungen an ihnen erst beschliessen, nachdem wir uns ber ihre konomischen, sozialen und kologischen Funktionen und Werte klar geworden sind. Und da solche Entscheide letztlich in die Zustndigkeit verschiedener AkteurInnen auf regionaler und lokaler Ebene fallen, sollte eine nachhaltige Land schafts planung zudem nicht nur messen, wie ein neues Projekt die Landschaftsleistungen beeinflusst, sondern auch bercksichtigen, welche Ansprche die beteiligten AkteurInnen an die betroffene Landschaft haben. Chair of Landscape Planning and Urban Systems (PLUS) The goal of sustainable landscape and environ mental planning is to balance the use of natural resources against their availability to ensure the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Current spatial planning is, however, primarily concerned with the question of land use and disregards the question of the availability of resources in space and time. Natural resources provide important economic, ecological and social services for human wellbeing, such as recreational opportunities, air filtering, micro-climate regulation, habitat for species, nutrient retention, water filtration, or a sense of place, to name but a few. If we consider landscape performance in the context of sustainable development, then decisions on changes in landscapes have to be taken under consideration of economic, social and ecological functions and values. In addition, as decision-making on landscape changes is becoming the domain of various groups of actors on the regional and local levels, sustainable landscape planning should not only measure the impact of new projects on landscape performance, but also consider the different actors demands on the landscape. Sustainable planning needs to link function and value knowledge of landscape services to the social system in which human actors deliberate about sustainable landscape development.

Funktion und wertlandschaftlicher Leistungen mit dem gesellschaftlichen System verknpfen, in dem die jeweiligen Entscheidungstragenden ber die nachhaltige Entwicklung einer Landschaft beraten und befinden. PLUS will das Verstndnis dafr frdern, wie urbane, peri-urbane und lndliche Systeme lebens wichtige Leistungen bereitstellen und welche wirtschaftlichen, gesellschaftlichen, politischen und kologischen Ansprche sie dadurch befriedigen. Wie verletzlich solche Systeme letztlich sind, hngt einerseits davon ab, ob sie ihre Leistungen nachhaltig erbringen knnen, das heisst, ob die unterschiedlichen Landnutzungen richtig verteilt sind und bewirtschaftet werden, sodass die Ressourcen auch knftig verfgbar bleiben. Andererseits kommt es auch darauf an, ob die Systeme und die Gesellschaft sich an die Folgen lokaler und globaler Vernderungen anpassen knnen. Voraussagen ber zuknftige Landnutzungen und ihre Einflsse auf die Bereitstellung und Nachfrage von Leistungen unter sich verndernden sozio-konomischen, politischen und klimatischen Bedingungen liefern die Grundlage, um regionale Entwicklungs-, Anpassungs- und Vermeidungsstrategien vorzuschlagen. Diese Strategien zur nachhaltigen Landschaftsentwicklung haben zum Ziel, den wirtschaftlichen Ertrag zu steigern, gleichzeitig aber auch die kosysteme und ihre Leistungen zu erhalten.

PLUS aims at fostering our understanding of how urban, peri-urban, and rural systems deliver essential services that meet economic, social, political, and environmental demands. On one hand, the vulnerability of these systems will depend on the sustainable supply of such services, and thus on an optimal arrangement and management of the different land uses to ensure the availability of the resources. On the other hand, it will depend on the capacity of the systems and human societies to cope with the impact of local and global change. Dazu sind die gesellschaftlichen und raumstrukturellen Vernderungen ebenso zu erkennen und zu beschreiben wie die Umbrche in der globalen Logistik. Das IVT und seine Vorgngerinstitute knnen auf 125 Jahre Forschung und Lehre im Verkehrswesen zurckblicken. Stand frher der Verkehrswegebau im Vordergrund, so dominieren heute planerische, betriebliche, konomische und gesellschaftliche Fragestellungen. Das IVT kann zudem auf eine langjhrige Erfahrung im Einsatz von IT-Systemen bei allen Verkehrstrgern aufbauen. In der Lehre will das IVT die Studierenden am Beispiel des Verkehrs zu Systemplanern und -ingenieuren ausbilden. Die Absolvierenden sollen zur Beherrschung aller Phasen des Lebenszyklus von Verkehrssystemen befhigt werden und gleichzeitig das ntige Verstndnis fr die Wechselwirkungen mit dem Umfeld erhalten. Axhausen (Director) Dr. Monica Menendez Prof. Dr. Ulrich Weidmann The focus of the research and teaching at the Institute for Transport Planning and Systems (IVT) lies on transportation systems planning and implementation and their evolution to address future needs. In order to achieve this, developments in society and spatial structures need to be recognised as well as those in global logistics. The IVT and its predecessor institutes look back on 125 years of research and teaching in transportation engineering. While in the past, the focus was on highway and railway design and construction, nowadays planning, operational, economic and social questions are the focus. Moreover, the IVT draws on many years of experience in using IT systems for all modes of transportation. The education at IVT trains students to be systems engineers familiar with the complexity of transportation systems. IVT graduates shall be able to understand and control all stages in the life cycle of transportation systems and understand the interactions between them and the social, political, economic and ecological environments. The Institute for Transport Planning and Systems maintains a high level of internationality, while at the same time addressing the needs of the Swiss practitioners and public.

Axhausen Verkehrsplanung Der Lehrstuhl fr Verkehrsplanung hat zwei Auf gaben: Die Erarbeitung neuen Wissens und neuer Verfahren zur Beobachtung, Messung, Beschreibung, Modellierung und Bewertung rumlichen Verhaltens, insbesondere des Verkehrsverhaltens ...und dessen Transfer durch Lehre, Fortbildung und angewandte Forschung, vor allem zu grossen Nachfrage- und Netzmodellen, beziehungsweise zur volkswirtschaftlichen Bewertung von Verhaltensnderungen. Prominente Beispiele laufender und krzlich abgeschlossener Projekte sind ein kontinuierliches 6-Wochen-Tagebuch zum Verkehrsverhalten, die Stated-Response-Befragungen zur Akzeptanz von Strassengebhren in der Schweiz, das Bench marking der Geographie der sozialen Netzwerke und ihrer Kontaktstrukturen, die berprfung der langfristigen Wirksamkeit der Infrastruktur investitionen seit 1850, das nationale Verkehrsmodell der Schweiz, ein Flchennutzungs- und Verkehrsmodell des Grossraums Zrich und schliesslich die agenten-basierte Mikrosimulation der Schweiz und der Schweizer Bevlkerung mit der selbst entwickelten Software MatSim-T. Transport Planning The Chair of Transport Planning has two main tasks: The development of new knowledge and new methods of observation, measurement, description, modelling and evaluation of spatial behaviour, travel behaviour in particular and their transfer through teaching, training and applied research, especially to large demand and network models, as well as the economic evaluation of behavioural changes. Prime examples of ongoing and recently completed projects are: a continuous six-week diary on travel behaviour; the stated-response surveys for acceptance of road charges in Switzerland; the benchmarking of the geography of social networks and their contact structures; a review on the long-term effectiveness of infrastructure investments since 1850; the Swiss National Transport model; a landuse and transport model of the metropolitan area of Zurich; and finally, the agent-based micro simulation of Switzerland and the Swiss population with the software MatSim-T, developed in-house. These contents outline the key strengths of the Chair. Currently, 20 research assistants with backgrounds in engineering and social sciences, as well as computer science, are able to adequately cover the entire breadth of the thematic contents. Dr. Monica Menendez Strassenverkehrstechnik Monica Menendez wurde im Oktober 2010 mit der Leitung der Forschungsgruppe Strassenverkehrstechnik am Institut fr Verkehrsplanung und Transportsysteme (IVT) der ETH Zrich betraut. Davor war sie fr Bain & Company in San Francisco als Unternehmensberaterin ttig. In die Firma eingetreten war sie 2006 als frisch promovierte Bau- und Umweltingenieurin, die ihre Abschlsse (MSc, PhD) an der Universitt von Kalifornien, Berkeley, erworben hatte. Die Forschungsgruppe Strassenverkehrstechnik widmet sich der Spitzenforschung auf dem Gebiet flssen. der Theorie und Handhabung von Verkehrs Unser oberstes Ziel ist es, Verkehrssysteme zu verbessern und diese dabei in einen nachhaltigen Zustand zu bringen. Dazu fhren Forschende und Studierende empirische so gut wie theoretische suchungen in Gruppenarbeiten durch und Unter wenden wissenschaftliche Kenntnisse an, um pragmatische Lsungen auf dem neuesten Stand der Technik zu entwickeln. Traffic Engineering In October 2010, Monica Menendez was appointed Director of the Traffic Engineering Research Group of the Institute for Transport Planning and Systems at ETH Zurich. Prior to that, she was a Management Consultant at Bain & Companys San Francisco office. She joined Bain after receiving a MSc and a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006. Her research interests include traffic flow theory and operations, sustainable transportation, and logistics. The main objective of the Traffic Engineering Research Group is to carry out cutting-edge research in the area of traffic flow theory and operations. Our ultimate goal is to improve transportation systems and move them towards a sustainable state. To achieve this, researchers and students in this group work together conducting both empirical and theoretical studies. We apply scientific knowledge to develop state-of-the-art and pragmatic solutions. Research priorities for the group include: Develop models to better replicate real traffic conditions Improve understanding of traffic phenomena Understand and quantify how different technologies and management strategies influence the performance of transportation systems Develop innovative solutions to improve traffic both in highways and urban networks

Leistungsfhigkeit und Netzstabilitt: Wie kann die Leistungsfhigkeit von Infrastrukturen des ffentlichen Verkehrs maximal aber stabil genutzt werden? Transport Systems Ulrich Weidmann has been Full Professor for Transport Systems at the Institute of Transport Planning and Systems since 2004. His research focuses on four main research areas: Passenger transport system evaluation and decision support: How can transportation systems be adequately evaluated, including economic, technical, operational, social and environmental aspects? Integration of rail freight transport systems in logistic chains: How should rail freight systems be improved on the conceptual, operational, technical and organisational level in order to best meet new requirements? System performance and stability: How can the performance of a public transport infrastructure network be exhausted while remaining reliable and stable? Rail infrastructure management: How can the financial needs for the railway infrastructure be minimised in all phases of the life cycle? In addition, the Chair is committed to questions dealing with regulatory changes and liberalisation in the transport sector. Teaching follows the life cycle of public transport systems for passengers and freight, including design of services, systems dimensioning, infrastructures and operations as well as management.

Nach seinem Diplom als Bauingenieur ETH weilte er bis 1994 als Doktorand am IVT. 1994 bis 2000 erarbeitete er bei den Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen (SBB) langfristige Angebotsstrategien und war fr den netzweiten Ausbau des S-Bahn- und Regionalverkehrs verantwortlich. Zwischen 2001 und 2004 war er Geschftsbereichsleiter Engineering der Division Infrastruktur der SBB. Er betreute dabei insbesondere die Bereiche Bahntechnik, Architektur, Umwelttechnik, Fahrbahnberwachung, Innovationsmanagement und Technische Standards. Zudem war er bau herren seitiger Projektleiter der Fhrerstandssignalisierung des Ltschberg-Basistunnels. In seiner jetzigen Funktion ist er Mitglied verschiedener wissenschaftlicher und staatlicher Beirte sowie von Gremien der Verkehrswirtschaft, Vertreter der Schweiz in der Transport Advisory Group der Europischen Union und Verwaltungsrat einer Bahnleittechnikunternehmung sowie eines namhaften Nahverkehrsbetriebes.

Ulrich Weidmann was born in 1963 as citizen of Einsiedeln, Switzerland. From 1988 on, he was a PhD student at the IVT after obtaining his degree in Civil Engineering at the ETH Zurich. From 1994 to 2000 he developed long-term passenger transport strategies for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and was responsible for the nationwide expansion of mass transit and regional transport systems. From 2001 to 2004, he was Head of Engineering of the SBBs infrastructure division. His main duties were the management of railway technologies, architecture, environmental issues, track observation, innovation management and standards. In addition to this, he led the cab-signalling train control project for the new Loetschberg tunnel. He is currently a member of scientific, governmental and industrial advisory groups in the field of public transport, a representative of Switzerland in the Transport Advisory Group of the European Union, a member of the governing board of a railway information technology company and a regional public transport enterprise. www.ivt.ethz.ch/oev

NSL Archiv (gta Archiv) Das NSL Archiv dokumentiert mit seinen Bestnden von Schweizer Raumplanern und Landschaftsarchitekten den Gang und die Entwicklungen der Stadt-Landschaft Schweiz. Seit 2001 setzt sich das NSL Archiv dafr ein, Bestnde zu akquirieren, zu sichern und zu erschliessen, um sie fr die Forschung zugnglich zu machen, damit fr sptere Generationen nachvollziehbar werden kann, wie und aus welchen Beweggrnden heraus sich die Stadt-Landschaft Schweiz entwickelt und verndert hat. Interviews mit Raumplanungspionieren, welche in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Archiv fur Zeitgeschichte der ETH Zrich durchgefuhrt werden, dienen dem gleichen Ziel. Ausser den bereits erschlossenen Nachlssen von Hans Marti, Martin Rotach und Albert Bodmer sind aus dem Raumplanungsbestand u. a. zu erwhnen Planpartner AG, die historische Bibliothek der Metron Brugg, Bestnde des Instituts fr Orts-, Regional- und Landesplanung (ORL) und des IVT sowie die Teilbestnde Hans Fluckiger und Hans Rudolf Isliker. Aus der Landschaftsarchitektur befinden sich im NSL Archiv der Nachlass der bedeutenden Kunstgrtner sowie Pflanzenzchter Theodor und Otto Froebel, der Nachlass Gustav Ammann, des Begleiters zahlreicher Projekte der Schweizer Architekturmoderne und Forschungs deposita. Es liegen Forschungsarbeiten zu Gustav Ammann und Dieter Kienast vor; zur Zeit wird ein Forschungsprojekt zu Theodor und Otto Froebel bearbeitet.

NSL Archive (gta archive) The NSL Archive documents the process and development of the city-landscape of Switzerland with its collections from Swiss spatial planners and landscape architects. Since 2001, the stated goal of the NSL Archive is to acquire and secure new materials and make them accessible for research so that it can be completely documented for later generations how and why the city-landscape of Switzerland developed and changed as it did. A collection of interviews with spatial planning pioneers that were conducted in cooperation with the Archive for Contemporary History of ETHZ also serve the same goal. In addition to the already available bequests from Hans Marti, Martin Rotach and Albert Bodmer, there are, among others, those worthy of mention from the spatial planning collection: Planpartner AG, the historic library of Metron Brugg, the library of the ORL Institute and the IVT and partial inventories from Hans Flckiger and Hans Rudolf Isliker. Among the collection of landscape architecture texts in the NSL Archive are the bequests of the landscape gardeners and plant breeders, Theodor and Otto Froebel, the bequest from Gustav Ammann, who accompanied numerous projects of Swiss Modern architecture, and research deposita. Die Zeitschrift disP The Planning Review wird vom Netzwerk Stadt und Landschaft herausgegeben und wendet sich an die internationale raum bezogene Wissenschaft und Praxis. Publiziert werden wissenschaftliche Beitrge zu raumplanungsrelevanten Themen aus den Bereichen Raumentwicklung, Stdte bau, Landschafts- und Umweltplanung, Regional- und Umweltkonomie, Verkehrs planung sowie Landschaftsarchitektur. disP The Planning Review frdert den Planungsdiskurs ber Nationalund Sprachgrenzen hinweg: Artikel werden wahlweise in Englisch, Deutsch, Franzsisch oder Italienisch verffentlicht. Jedem Artikel ist ein englischsprachiges Abstract vorangestellt. Ergnzend zu den wissenschaftlichen Artikeln bietet die Zeitschrift zustzlich die informativen Rubriken Citytour, disP Service und Buchbesprechungen. Jede Ausgabe enthlt zudem aktuelle Mitteilungen des Koopertionspartners Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP).

The journal disP The Planning Review is published by the Network City and Landscape and addresses the international spatially related science and practice. disP publishes scientific contributions on spatial planning relevant themes from the fields of spatial development, urban design, landscape and environmental planning, regional and environmental economy, traffic planning and landscape architecture. The journal promotes the planning discourse beyond national and language borders. Articles are selectively published in English, German, French or Italian. Each article is also preceded by an abstract in English. Complementary to the scientific articles, the journal offers in addition the informative rubrics of City-Tour, disP Service and book reviews. Each issue contains current news from the cooperation partner AESOP, the Association of European Schools of Planning. The quality of the scientific contributions is ensured through a review process that complies with international standards (double blind process). disP The Planning Review is indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). The review is published quarterly and a subscription can be obtained from Taylor & Francis.
