Reflexive Verbs

Reflexive Verbs are used every day in Germany in both speech and in writing. Making sentences with reflexive verbs is quite easy. All one must do is use the subject with a reflexive verb and then the reflexive noun that goes with the subject. The same reflexive noun is used for both the dative and accusative cases with the exception of the nouns ich and du. Below is a table of the reflexive pronouns that go with the nouns. For example, a sentence appears like this is in the dative case: Ich dusche mich. (I take a shower.) There is no direct object, so mich is used instead of mir. A sentence in the accusative case is as follows: Ich wasche mir die Harre. (I wash my hair) The direct object is the hair so the accusative case is used. In German, unlike in English, when referring to the body or a piece of clothing, a definite article is used instead of the traditional possessive adjective in English. Below is an example: Hanz zieht sich den Mantel aus. (Hanz is taking of his coat.) Notice how in German, den replaces his in English.
