BASIC CONCEPTS IN SETTLEMENT STUDIES AND THEIR CONCRETE

APPLICATION-
EXAMPLE
ANCIENT TOWNS

Ventsislav Dinchev

settlement unit and form of settlement life are among the basic concepts in settlement studies. major and fundamental concept is settlement
structure. The settlement structure is an expression of the qualitative identity
and general functional nature of the settlement unit as regards the particular
socio-economic, political, ethno-cultural and natural conditions for settlement
realization of certain society in general. It is the basic qualitative similarities
and differences in the structure of the i.ndividual settlement units that bring
about their integration into some form of settlement life and allow to distinguish between the main forms of settlement life.
The settlement structure consists of or includes separate "structural groups".
In the ancient "polis" city, for example, the basic group or structural core is
the
place complex. This is the
place itself, i. the agora/forum
and the
buildings around, related to the city local government, viz. the
bullevterion/curia, the
basilica, the temple or temples, etc. The
place complex is an emanation and symbol of the city local government, including the case when
latter is in the form of internal autonomy within
the borders of the Roman Empire.
Another basic concept in settlement studies is spatial scheme. The structure of settlement unit/form of settlement life is materialized or realized in
space certain manner, i. it is realized some spatial scheme. In the
most highly developed, i. city form oflife, the spatial scheme is virtually the
city planning.
