eine volle Nacht im Walde
selbander wanderten wir.
Nun soll’st du, Mime, mich meiden!
Lern’ ich hier nicht, was ich lernen soll,
allein zieh’ ich dann weiter:
dich endlich werd’ ich da los!
Mime Glaube, Liebster,
lern’st du heut’ und hier das Fürchten nicht,
an andrem Ort, zu andrer Zeit,
schwerlich erfährst du’s je.
Siehst du dort den dunklen Höhlenschlund?
Darin wohnt ein gräulich wilder Wurm:
unmaaßen grimmig ist er und groß,
ein schrecklicher Rachen reißt sich ihm auf;
mit Haut und Haar, auf einen Happ
verschlingt der Schlimme dich wohl.
Siegfried (immer unter der Linde sitzend)
Gut ist’s, den Schlund ihm zu schließen:
drum biet’ ich mich nicht dem Gebiß.
Mime Giftig gießt sich ein Geifer ihm aus:
wen mit des Speichels Schweiß er bespei’t,
dem schwinden wohl Fleisch und Gebein’.
Siegfried Daß des Geifers Gift mich nicht sehre,
weich’ ich zur Seite dem Wurm.
Mime Ein Schlangenschweif schlägt sich ihm auf:
wen er damit umschlingt und fest umschließt,
dem brechen die Glieder wie Glas!
Siegfried Vor des Schweifes Schwang mich zu
wahren,
halt’ ich den Argen im Aug’.
Doch heiße mich das: hat der Wurm ein Herz?
Mime Ein grimmiges hartes Herz.
Siegfried Das sitzt ihm doch, wo es jedem schlägt,
trag’ es Mann oder Thier?
Mime Gewiß, Knabe, da führt’s auch der Wurm.
Jetzt kommt dir das Fürchten wohl an?
(Siegfried, er bisher nachlässig ausgestreckt, er-
hebt sich rasch zum Sitz.)
Siegfried Nothung stoß’ ich dem Stolzen in’s Herz!
Soll das etwa Fürchten heißen?
He, du Alter! Ist das Alles
was deine List mich lehren kann?
Fahr’ deines Wegs dann weiter;
das Fürchten lern’ ich hier nicht.
Mime Wart’ es nur ab! Was ich dir sage,
dünke dich tauber Schall:
ihn selber mußt du hören und seh’n,
die Sinne vergeh’n dir dann schon.
for a livelong night in woodlands dark
we two have wandered alone.
Mime, now straight shalt thou leave me!
If here I learn not what thou wouldst teach,
alone shalt thou fare onward:
free shall I then be from thee!
Mime Truly, comrade,
if today and here thou learn’st it not,
no other place, no other time
ever will teach thee fear.
Seest thou there the darksome cavern mouth?
Therein dwells a dragon fierce and grim:
fearfully grisly is he and big,
with threatening jaws wide open he yawns;
with skin and hair, all in one gulp,
the brute will swallow thee whole.
Siegfried (still sitting under the lime tree)
’Twere well to close up his gullet:
so, clear of his jaws will I keep.
Mime Poisoned foam from his mouth poureth out:
if upon thee a drop should but fall,
thy body and bones would melt.
Siegfried That the poisoned foam my not hurt me,
free will I leave him his path.
Mime A serpent’s tail sweeps he around:
if that should catch thee fast and fold thee close,
thy limbs would be broken like glass!
Siegfried From his twisting tail to preserve me,
well will I hold him in sight.
But this let me know: has the brute a heart?
Mime A merciless, cruel heart.
Siegfried And lies it there where all hearts do beat,
hearts of men or of beasts?
Mime Be sure, stripling, there find’st thou it too.
Now feel’st thou no fear in thine own?
(Siegfried, who has till now lain indolently, sits up
suddenly.)
Siegfried Nothung into his heart will I thrust!
Is that what thou callest fearing?
Hey! Old babbler! Is that lesson
all that thy crafty guile can teach?
Hence on thy way fare onward:
no fearing here shall I learn.
Mime Wait but a while! What I have told thee
deem’st thou but empty sound:
the dragon must thou hear and see,
and then will thy senses grow faint.
