Interactive, "hands-on" installations that solicit
spectator participation were collaboratively
developed for the museum by artists and resear-
chers Artisticallyandtechnicallysophisticated
commentaries on the fascination and hazards
of the media world introduce the user to the
"world of games" or investigate the relationship
of media to body and space. An "AcousticWorfd
Atlas" invites visitors to compose and experiment
with soundscapes derived from all corners of the
globe. An "Interactive Art Gallery" brings to-
gether pioneering works and current output in
the field of media art. Here, the actions of the
visitors calf into being artworks that are invariab-
ly new and different according to the manipula-
tion of the individual . The "Salon Digital" takes
up its activities as a forum for discussion and vir-
tual museum both locally and on the global net-
work The individual installations will be opened
by small-scale performance events during the
inauvural weekend.

The Museum of Contemporary Art houses one
of the world's largest media art collections
"Classics" of the young genre, such as Bill Viola's
"The City of Man" and Nam June Paik's "Passa-
ge , are displayed alongside distinctive pieces
by famous video artists like Gary Hill, Marie-Jo
Lafontaine, Bruce Nauman, Fabrizio Plessi and

in the Museum of Contemporary Art, all artistic
fields are included - with painting, graphics and
sculpture figuring as prominently as contempor-

ZKM has always used its media art festival to
show the full range of its museums and insti-
tutes. collections and production facilities. The
new ZKM building inaugurated concurrently
with the Multimediale 5 makes it possible to
expand this tradition. All of the ZKM institutes
have grasped the opportunity offered by the
spacious premises to present completed projects
and works-in-progress in live events that com-
plement the exhibitions and publications . The
Multimediale 5 will therefore offer an up-to-date
survey of the many-sided developments in the
range of disciplines addressed by ZKM, at the
same time building on and expanding the finks
between the arts and new technologies . That
ZKM lives from and with its artists-in-residence
is demons tra red by the concerts and temporary
shows in which their inno-votive output can be
seen and heard. The ZKM museums and collec-
tions have incorporated their subject matter into
the fourweekend-long program of events at this
year's festival. We warmly invite our visitors to
