Vorwort
In
In

Editorial
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation links Germany to the knowledge of the world. In
international competition for the topmost experts, it offers to this end various programmes to attract
scientists and scholars at different stages of their careers. Support involves both funding and
personal support in all matters relating to a stay in Germany and to subsequent cooperations. For
the latter the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers numerous kinds of sponsorship in the
framework of the alumni programmes. In this way, an active international network of more than
29,000 academics has grown up since the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation was founded in
1953. Nearly every conceivable discipline and more than 140 countries are represented in this global
community of top researchers, which includes 55 Nobel Prize winners. The Humboldt Colloquia are
a format designed to strengthen the Humboldt Foundation’s network abroad, foster contact to its
sponsorship recipients and partners and provide a forum for debating and sharing current trends in
research and issues relating to international research funding. The colloquia also allow a selected
group of junior researchers to discover more about the funding programmes of the Foundation and
further funding opportunities in Germany.
The academic exchange with Argentina has great potential: 11,8% of the population has completed
university studies, there are around 720 researchers per one million inhabitants* – the highest
number in Latin America. Since 1954, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has granted 414
fellowships to researchers from Argentina, whilst 22 scientists and scholars have received
prestigious research awards. In Uruguay we have a smaller network of 30 fellows und 2 research
award winners. There is still even greater potential for winning excellent researchers from Argentina
and Uruguay for the Foundation’s programmes.
The funding philosophy of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is based on the principle that
excellence in research thrives best when institutions grant researchers trust and freedom so that
they can strive for gaining knowledge. Therefore, the Colloquium focuses especially on the role of
curiosity-driven research. In this context Alexander von Humboldt serves as an example: His life as
an explorer demonstrates what researchers are capable of when they are given free rein to their
curiosity.
5
Das abschließende World Café bietet Gelegenheit, Strategien
6
The Colloquium provides the academics taking part with a platform to present their own research
topic to a wide specialist audience during interdisciplinary working groups and thus to generate
and receive ideas for specialist and interdisciplinary networking. At a dedicated session, selected
junior researchers will present their work with posters. The aim is to introduce them to the
Humboldt Network and win them for a research stay in Germany. Humboldtians will report on their
experiences in Germany and advise the junior researchers. The role of curiosity-driven research will
be considered from an Argentinian and Uruguayan perspective. The closing World Café session will
provide an opportunity to discuss visions and strategies to engage Humboldtians in the future.

The World Café: Visions and Strategies for Future Engagements of Humboldtians
Saturday, 27 October 2018, 11 a.m.
We encourage you strongly to attend this interactive session to help us draw conclusions from
the colloquium and to start building bridges from this meeting as a one-time-event organised
by the Foundation to self-initiated and self-organised activities as well as future strategies and
initiatives by and for the Humboldt community in Argentina and Uruguay. We appreciate your
feedback and engagement!
1. What are currently the most important or urgent challenges for the development of research and
science in Argentina and Uruguay?
2. How can the Argentinian/Uruguayan-German scientific and scholarly cooperation contribute to
these issues?
3. Which specific activities would you seek to engage in to advance progress on these issues?
