1-6. Lead-free Solder

Boards requiring use of lead-free solder are printed with a lead free mark (LF) indicating the solder
contains no lead.
(Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with the lead free mark due to their particular
size.)

: LEAD FREE MARK

m
. Be sure to use the lead-free solder for the printed circuit board printed with the lead free mark.
. The lead-free solder melts at a temperature about 40 dC higher than the ordinary solder, therefore, it is
recommended to use the soldering iron having a temperature regulator.
. The ordinary soldering iron can be used but the iron tip has to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly
longer time. The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if the heated tip is applied for too long, so
be careful.

3-2. Circuit Description

3-2-1. C Board

Video input block

Composite video signal is input from VIDEO IN connector. The input signal is directly input to a main
CPU and converted into digital data using the internal AD converter of the main CPU.

PC input block
The input signal from RGB of channel INPUT A and digital signal from HDMI of one channel INPUT B
are input to a main CPU. An analog RGB signal is converted into digital data using the internal AD
converter of the main CPU.
A component signal and video GBR signal as well as a PC signal can be also input to the RGB/YPBPR
connector of INPUT A.

AUDIO input block

The audio signals are input from the AUDIO stereo mini jack of VIDEO IN and INPUT A and HDMI of
INPUT B. The signal selected using an audio codec is output to a speaker.

Main CPU & sub CUP

PW-C868 made by Plxelworks is installed in main CPU, and an R5P series made by Renesas is installed
in sub-CPU. Input signal’s pixel count conversion, aspect conversion, and OSD addition are performed
using these ICs. These ICs also enable brightness, sharpness, chroma, hue, USB, network, and system
controls.
Control target: Control panel, OSD display, USB, network lamp cover switch, LED, and serial control

LCD timing generator block

Using a Sony LCD panel IC, the LCD timing generator block generates a timing pulse that drives an LCD
panel. This block also uses a system in which the driving direction is reversed for each frame. White
balance adjustment, gamma adjustment, and color smudge adjustment as well as timing pulse generation
are performed in this IC.

LCD driver block

The LCD driver block uses a Sony LCD panel drive IC. The LCD panel is 12-phase- driven using the tim-
ing pulse generated using a timing generator. This block mounts GBR and a three-channel circuit.

Fan control and temperature detection block

This block uses an IC into which fan control and temperature detection functions were incorporated.
. Fan control
Detects FG of a fan to control the number of rotations. Sets the number of rotations according to the
internal temperature of this unit.
. Temperature detection
Temperature sensors are arranged at three points to measure the internal temperature of this unit.

Ballast drive block

This block drives power unit (ballast) in synchronization with an input signal. A synchronization circuit is
constituted by sub-CPU.

VPL-DX145 3-5 (E)

3-2-2. Sensor Board

The thermal sensor board (lamp) of a lamp temperature sensor, the lamp door switch board of a lamp
cover switch, and the thermal sensor board (external) board of an external air temperature sensor, and the
IR sensor board are available as a sensor board.

3-2-3. Power Unit

This board supplies lamp power and system power. The system power outputs +16.7 V and +6.2 V and
generates the power for a circuit on a C board.

SAFETY CHECK-OUT

After correcting the original service problem,

perform the following safety checks before
releasing the set to the customer :

Check the metal trim, “metallized” knobs,

screws, and all other exposed metal parts for AC
leakage. Check leakage as described below.

LEAKAGE TEST

The AC leakage from any exposed metal part

to earth ground and from all exposed metal
parts to any exposed metal part having a return
to chassis, must not exceed 3.5 mA. Leakage
current can be measured by any one of three
methods.

1. A commercial leakage tester, such as the

Simpson 229 or RCA WT-540A. Follow the
manufacturers’ instructions to use these
instruments.
2. A battery-operated AC milliammeter. The
Data Precision 245 digital multimeter is
suitable for this job.
3. Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor
by means of a VOM or battery-operated AC
voltmeter. The “limit” indication is 5.25 V, so
analog meters must have an accurate low-
voltage scale. The Simpson 250 and Sanwa
SH-63Trd are examples of a passive VOM
that is suitable. Nearly all battery operated
digital multimeters that have a 20 V AC
range are suitable. (See Fig. A)
