Wales is in the west of the island of Britain and covers an

area of 20,779km. To the west, north and south it borders

the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. The north-south
extension is 274 km, and the east-west extension is 97 km.
With just under three million inhabitants, this results in a
population density of 140 people per square kilometre. Most
of the inhabitants were concentrated in the industrial centres
in the south-east around Newport, Cardiff and Swansea and
the coast in the north.
