There are 3 articles in English: THE or A/AN or NOTHING

Use A/an when referring to an unspecific or generic noun. (Indefinite article).

e.g. I bought an apple and a banana.
A is used before a consonant sound.
An is used before a vowel sound.
Use The when you’re referring to a specific noun or group of nouns. (Definite article)
e.g. She has a brother and a sister. The sister is called Sarah.

Remember:
- Indefinite and uncountable nouns = never take an article.
Exception: Uncountable nouns can use “the” if you are referring to something specific.

- Indefinite, countable and plural nouns = never take an article.

e.g. Life is wonderful. (life in general = indefinite and uncountable)

e.g. The life of a solider is dangerous. (specifically the life of a solider = definite and
uncountable)
e.g. Smoking is bad for people. (Rauchen ist schlecht für den Menschen/In English “people”
is indefinite, countable and plural).
Uncountable nouns:
These uncountables nouns can use “the” if you are referring to something specific.
