While landing at Stansted to drop off our temporary import paperwork before heading to
Reykjavik we were ramp checked by the CAA. Their officer informed me that they were the
equivalent of our FAA in the states.
He said they were stationed at that FBO for the day and they were ramp checking every
aircraft on that ramp for the next 5 days.
The two gentleman spent over an hour going through everything we had with a fine tooth
comb. I will list the items they checked just so our other pilots will have an idea of what we
should have on board when in the EU.
• They were very concerned about wanting to know if we were charter or not. Of course we
were not.
• They checked our pilot licenses.
• They checked the registration and airworthiness certificate.
• They checked our temp. Import paperwork.
• They asked if our NAV database was current and made me show them my backup charts
which I had printed out.
• They did a walk around of the airplane to make sure it was in flyable condition they said.
• They made me show them the max number of occupants limitation in the POH and made
sure there were no more than 11 seats in the aircraft. (This aircraft didn't have the two small
folding seats in the back.)
• They wanted to know if we were RVSM certified. When I said yes they asked to see the
authorization letter (LOA) which we had.
• They asked if I had Hazmat on board to which I replied "Of Course Not". We did have prist
and they asked about it, but were not concerned with that since it was for our airplane.
• They made me show them the max floor loading per square foot in the POH since we had a
lot of cargo in the baggage section and asked me if I met the requirement. We did..I think
they just wanted to see if I knew what it was or could locate it.
• They made sure we had a flashlight and fire extinguisher on board.
• Asked if we were using an MEL.
• They wanted to see our flight plans.
• They were very concerned with how we knew the aircraft was in compliance with it's
maintenance schedule. I informed them our maintenance books were not kept inside the
airplane and that our dispatch trip sheet was our maintenance release as well as our flight
release. Of course they wanted to see that I had the sheet with me (we did).....Told them our
dispatchers wouldn't dare dispatch us without making sure the airplane was in compliance
with all inspections and that they work very closely with maintenance to insure it.....they
bought that answer. (We don't get mechanic releases before flights in the EU like at home
base).
• They checked our seat belts to make sure they worked.
• They checked our insurance and made sure it was in date and not expired.
• They made sure our cargo net was in place.
• They checked to see that we had oxygen masks on board and checked the oxygen gauge to
see if we were flying with a charged bottle.
• They wanted to see the aircraft's [FCC] radio operating license.
• Asked to see our life jackets and raft since we were going over the Atlantic..
The guys were very nice, but very thorough.
All of our paperwork was in order so they thanked us for our time and they were on their way...
