beim Mozart-Fest in Wrzburg.

ensemble berlin
This group of musicians and friends from
the Berliner Philharmoniker orchestrawere
drawn together by the opportunity to make
high-level music in a relaxed atmosphere together. They started playing in an ensemble
at the first ever Landsberg summer music
festival in 1999. By the time this small yet
refined festival of chamber music had drawn
to a close, a shared desire to give further
concerts at other times of year had been expressed and thus the Ensemble Berlin was
born.
There are no limits to the ensembles program. On the one hand they perform original classical, Romantic, and modernist compositions for the archetypal chamber music
combinations of quintet, octet, and nonet,
yet adaptations form a further focus of the
ensembles artistic work. The ensembles
wonderfully fruitful collaboration with the
orchestral musician and arranger Wolfgang
Renz produced an entire series of musical
treasures, such as an adaptation of Franz
Schuberts Wanderer Fantasy for a nonet.
This arrangement, composed exclusively for
the Ensemble Berlin, offers both the listener
and the artist completely new tonal variations while providing a completely new take
on an existing repertoire.
The ensemble continues to find its inspiration for all its activities at the Landsberg
festival. It is here that the ensemble forges
its new repertoire in a laid back atmosphere
and audiences can actually hear how much
fun the musicians are having during the performance something they often continue
to hear afterwards during the long evenings
around the campfire with the festivals hosts.
This is part of a time-honored tradition for
the Dominican Sisters of Landsberg who
have truly made a place in their hearts for
their visitors from Berlin.
Although these two works are bound together by the fact that they were both composed in remembrance of loved and admired individuals who had passed away, this is
not the thought that gave rise to the decision
to combine the two. It was instead inspired
by the very character of Maurice Ravel, who
had fostered a great affinity for Russian music ever since as a young man he first heard
concerts of Russian music conducted by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. As a brilliant orchestrator, Ravel was also responsible for what is
perhaps the most famous orchestration of
Mussorgskys Pictures at an Exhibition as
well as for his own work Le Tombeau de
Couperin. After composing the original piano piece he went on to score four of the six
movements for the orchestral version.
Modest Mussorgskys (18391881) composition of Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired
