Germans have a mandatory identity card in addition to being able to get a passport. The identity card
contains a photo and some basic information about yourself, including your current address. It is used
to prove your age (e. g. to be able to buy alcohol), to prove your address (e. g. to take advantage of
regional offers) or to prove your identity (e. g. when making a contract or voting). The identity card is
also enough to travel within the European Union, but you'll still need a passport to travel outside the
EU.
Americans can come to Germany as tourists for a limited timeframe without needing a special visa,
just having a passport is enough. You will however need a visa if you are staying here for a longer
time, if you plan to study or take a job here.
The border control wears similar uniforms as the regular German police, based on the color green.
German police cars are also green, set off in white or silver. Taxis are recognizable by their ivory color
and of course the taxi sign on top.
