50/50 model verbs: können, müssen, wollen

The verbs können, müssen, wollen are all grouped together as modal verbs. These verbs can
be thought of at 50/50 verbs as the verb forms are irregular in the singular forms, and take
regular verb endings in the plural forms. Consider the following conjugations in the singular
forms:

können, müssen wollen

ich kann muss will

Du kannst musst willst

er/sie/es kann musst will

wir können müssen wollen

ihr könnt müsst wollt

Sie/sie können, müssen wollen

Analysis of singular and plural verb forms:

A closer look at these verb forms. What are the verb endings, if any, in the ich and er/sie/es
form?

Do the er/sie/es verb forms end in a -t- as in er spielt, or sie lernt? Yes/No. (circle one answer)

Identify the ending of the ‘du’ form verbs. Do the ‘du’ form verbs take regular verb endings?

Now look at the infinitive verb forms of können and müssen. Do the ich and er/sie/es forms of
these verbs take an umlaut? Or, do the verbs können and müssen drop the umlaut in the ich
and er/sie es forms?

Finally read through the wir, ihr and Sie/sie forms. Are the wir, ihr, Sie/sie verb ending as
expected in the plural forms? Or, are the verb forms in the plural different? Which verbs take an
umlauted vowel in the plurals?

English translations:
Können translates into English as talent, or to have the ability to do something.
Müssen translates into English as ‘must’.
Wollen translates into English as ‘to want’ to do something.

Conjugated modal verb with infinitive action verb at end of the sentence!
In sentence form the modal verb is the second element of the sentence. The verb indicating
action is placed at the end of the sentence in the infinitive form. Read each of the following
questions. Note the placement of the modal verb and the infinitive verb at the end of the
question. Then, translate each question into English:

3. Was willst du essen?
